A&M’s 2003 Distinguished Alumni Honored
Established by The
Association of Former Students and Texas A&M University in 1962, the
Distinguished Alumnus Award recognizes outstanding former students for
professional accomplishments, civic leadership, and dedicated service to Texas
A&M University. The Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest honor
bestowed by Texas A&M and The Association upon a former student of Texas
A&M University. This year’s recipients are: Carlos Cantu ’55, M.L. “Red”
Cashion ’53, A.W. “Head” Davis Jr. ’45, and J. Howard Shelton ’41. Please visit

Distinguished
Achievement Awards Presented to Texas A&M Faculty and Staff
Each spring, The
Association of Former Students honors faculty and staff members at Texas
A&M University for their dedication, knowledge and accomplishment. Receipt
of the University-level Distinguished Achievement Award is the highest honor
that can be bestowed upon a faculty or staff member. For more information on

Students
Recognized for Spirit and Academic Excellence
Each year 52 students
are selected from hundreds of applicants on the basis of involvement,
enthusiasm, and Aggie Spirit to receive the prestigious Buck Weirus Spirit
Award. Unlike other awards, the Buck Weirus Spirit Award recognizes those
students who make contributions to campus life by participating in university
events, traditions and student organizations. To see this year’s recipients

The Thomas S. Gathright Scholar Academic Excellence Award is presented by The
Association of Former Students in conjunction with Texas A&M’s Student
Government Association. The award was established in April 1973 and is awarded
annually to the top academic sophomore, junior, and senior of each college.
Named in honor of the university’s first president, this award recognizes
outstanding scholastic achievement on a university-wide scale. Please see

Holmes ’87 Joins The Association Team
The Association of
Former Students is pleased to introduce Marty Holmes ’87 as Assistant Executive
Director for Programs and Marketing. Marty graduated from Texas A&M in 1987
with a BBA in Marketing and joined The Association staff in May 2003. He comes
to The Association from the North American Meat Producers Association in
Reston, Va. where he was the Executive Vice President. Please see

All May 2003 graduates
of Texas A&M are now in The Association of Former Students’ Online
Directory of Former Students. Graduates are now able to register with The
Association’s official website,

to start using their one year of free access the Directory. The Directory is
valuable in locating job opportunities, and connecting graduates with Aggies in
their new area. The Association of Former Students encourages new graduates to
keep their own information in the Directory up to date to keep receiving
invitations, Texas A&M news, and the renowned Texas Aggie magazine.

Richardson '87, television/production manager for the Texas A&M Athletic
Department, will be the guest speaker for the Dallas A&M Club's Friday
Luncheon on May 23rd. As a part of Richardson's appearance, he has produced a
video that will relive some great moments in A&M Football History plus some
short clips of video projects to give us a perspective of what they do for

25 - Junction Boy Stallings to Speak at Benefit
Coaching
legend Gene Stallings ’57 will be the keynote speaker at a luncheon benefiting
the Luke and Rachel Batten Foundation on June 25th at 11:45 am in Reed Arena.
Luke and Rachel Watson are children of Sam and Melinda Watson, both Class of
’89. Batten Disease is a fatal inherited neurological disorder, the most common
degenerative brain disease in children. Stallings is newly appointed to the
President's Counsel on Health and Mental Retardation. For more information,

Cadets Receive Doherty Award
Three newly
commissioned officers—and fresh graduates of Texas A&M and its Corps of
Cadets—proudly accepted plaques designating them as winners of 2003 Doherty
Awards, which are presented to the cadets judged to be the most outstanding in
each of the ROTC programs—Army, Air Force and Navy-Marine Corps. They
recipients are: Navy Ensign Christopher D. Snyder ’03, Army 2nd Lt. Trevor S.
Voelkel ’03, and Air Force 2nd Lt. Derek S. Woodley ’03.

Family Foundation Endows Music Program
Texas A&M
University’s music degree may be new, but it is striking a chord with Aggies.
The Crawley Family Foundation of Oklahoma City has pledged to endow a $200,000
faculty development fund in music.

Awards Presented to Individuals and Organizations
The 2003 Keeping the
Dream Alive Diversity Awards have been presented to both individuals and
organizations at Texas A&M. Since 1991, the awards have been held to
acknowledge and honor the efforts of members of the campus community who strive
during the year to promote understanding and appreciation of diversity at Texas
A&M.
