Peter Hafner Squire 

April 16, 1954 - June 24, 2023 

Peter Hafner Squire was born in Houston on the 16th of April 1954, and passed away in Houston on Saturday, the 24th of June 2023. He was 69 years of age.

He was educated at The University Of The South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and received a B.A. in History in 1976. While at Sewanee, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, serving in many capacities as an officer of the active chapter and as President of the Tau Delta Alumni Association. Mr. Squire was active in the Associated Alumni of The University Of The South and served as President of the Houston, Texas/Gulf Coast Chapter of the Sewanee Club for a number of years. Mr. Squire served as a Trustee of The University Of The South for the Episcopal Diocese of Texas for multiple terms and served as the Off Campus Admissions Program officer for The University Of The South to the Diocese of Texas for many years. Mr. Squire was an active leader and participant in many community and church related projects and was an active member of Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church and Christ Church Cathedral in Houston, serving, among other duties, as Lay Reader, Chalice Bearer, and Usher. Mr. Squire was made a Knight and later elevated to the rank of Commander in the chivalrous order of the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (SMOTJ). Mr. Squire’s business career was spent in the investment, banking, legal and asset management industry where he established The Occidental Capital Trust of North America in 1992.

Peter is survived by his mother, Jane Hafner Anderson, and her husband Dr. Frank Anderson. He is also survived by his sisters, Josephine Ireland and her husband Kelly, and Charlotte McCarter and her husband James. His surviving nephews are Reed McCarter, David Ireland and his wife Chelsea, and Wesley Ireland. His surviving niece is Amanda VanRooyen and her husband Joe.

Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Peter during a reception to be held at one o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 30th of June, in the Sanders Hall in the Latham Building at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave in Houston. Immediately following, a funeral service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon in the sanctuary.

The family will gather for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to The Permanent Endowment Fund at the University Of The South, 735 University Avenue, Sewanee, Tennessee, 37383; Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave. Houston, Texas, 77002; or to the charity of one’s choice.
