Thomas Jay McMickle, born September 17, 1944, a native Houstonian and 54 year resident of Sagemont, died peacefully at home, on Wednesday April 3, 2024 after several years of non-recovery from side effects of cancer surgery in 2018.

He was first and foremost an avid and accomplished FIFA Soccer Referee for South Belt Soccer Leagues, from youth levels through high school, as well as college, and private sector teams, all over the Houston Metro areas and surrounding cities. Actively a Referee Trainer, Assessor, Assigner, program developer and data keeper, and volunteer field worker, he put all his spare time and energy into creating a legacy of dedication to the community. He wished to instill his love of the game in future generations.

A 1969 Texas A&M University graduate, he was a Wildlife Science major, and environmental advocate. He directly hired on to work for the City of Houston, then Harris County, got on with then Texas Air Control Board/TNRCC, left for the private sector, to a refinery named Hill Petroleum and Charter Oil Co., left the States for Saudi ARAMCO-Environmental Div. in Jeddah, K.S.A., and lastly back to Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Environmental Compliance Div. in Huntsville, through retirement in 2011, then back to Houston.

He was an athlete/jogger, sportsman, game hunter occasionally, camper, traveler, self-taught computer guy, all-around do-it-yourselfer/handyman, outdoor enthusiast, animal advocate, deep thinker and planner, loved classic cars and country music, and was always intent on making a productive life that mattered.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Jefferson and Jean Godwin McMickle, and sister, Betty Lynn Wilkinson and daughter Sandra, all of Houston.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Charla Harms McMickle, son Jay Landon and wife Tracy Lynn McMickle, two granddaughters, Avery 17 and Landyn 14, and one nephew Robert Wilkinson and son David Wilkinson, most currently all of South Belt/Friendswood area.

He led an active career and private life, with many contributions, and will be missed. A Memorial Service will be open for visitation at South Park Funeral Home at 1310 N. Main, off South Belt, in Pearland, on Saturday, April 20, 2024 between 2pm and 4pm. His cremains will be held by his wife for interment together with her in the future, at their South Park site.
