Windol C. Weaver, Lt.Col. USAF (Ret)

December 16, 1941 - April 30, 2024 

Lt. Col. (Ret) Windol C. Weaver, 82, of York, Maine, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2024, after a lengthy illness. Born in Corsicana, Texas, the son of Clem and Dixie Weaver, Windol was a graduate of his beloved Texas A&M University, where he was a ROTC Corps of Cadet Commander.

Windol began his Air Force career after graduating from Texas A&M and entering pilot training. As a 23-year veteran of the Air Force, Windol spent most of that time as a pilot flying first B-52 bombers and then FB-111's. During his three tours in the Vietnam War, he flew over 500 missions earning numerous commendations and medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, which is awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement during aerial flight.

It was also at Texas A&M where he met the love of his life Sondra Nicole Covey Weaver. Married 58 years, they lived around the country in various Air Force towns until finally settling in York, when Windol was assigned for a second time to Pease Air Force Base in 1980.

After retirement from the Air Force in 1987, Windol worked various jobs to pass the time, from making sandwiches as he wisecracked with friends at the Lunch Box on Rt. 1 to manning a desk as a stockbroker in Portsmouth, N.H.

In 1990, Windol was elected to the York Budget Committee, where he found the rewarding public service role that eventually led him to run for the Maine State Legislature, representing York. Well-known for his campaign signs that read “Leave it to Weaver,” he served four terms as a State Representative from 2006 to 2014, working tirelessly for his constituents. Windol was always the first to arrive at the State House and had a perfect attendance/voting record.

In addition to Sondra, who still resides at their home on Southside Road, he is survived by two sons, Kevin, of Lancaster, PA, and Kyle of York, ME, and four grandchildren in college and high school, Maxwell Weaver, Stella Blue Weaver, Sophie Weaver, and Lucilla Weaver. He also leaves behind his sister Kay Fleming and his youngest sister Peggye Thornburg and brother-in-law Frank Thornburg, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.

Despite witnessing troubling scenes of war, Windol was always chipper. Walking door to door while campaigning during election season, he hailed residents with his signature Southern accent, sharp wit, and big smile. Windol credited his happy disposition to his youngest sister Peggye, who thrived in life despite the crutches and braces she has worn since childhood from the effects of Polio. As he met with residents while campaigning, he was at times heard to say, “If that’s your biggest problem, you’re doing alright!”

Making York his home for 44 years, he enjoyed golfing and lunching with friends, his Boxer dogs, and time spent relaxing on the banks of the York River. Even when beset with Parkinson’s disease, his upbeat personality was always on display, his dogs at his side and always near his loving wife, sons, and grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at the First Parish Congregational Church in York, Maine on Monday, May 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. A reception will immediately follow in the Fellowship Hall. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Windol Weaver’s name to the First Parish Church, 180 York St., York, ME 03909.
