February 24, 1936 - January 30, 2024 

Macario “Mac” Garza, 87, of Mission, Texas passed away on January 30th 2024 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eleuterio and Elida Garza, brothers, Aristeo, Mario, Humberto and sister, Aida Garza.

He was born on February 24, 1936 in Benavides, Texas. From his humble beginnings, Macario always possessed a strong determination and a will to succeed. He graduated from Benavides High School in 1956 showcasing his athletic prowess in football and track/field. Following graduation, Macario pursued his education at Del Mar Junior College, later earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Texas A & I University in 1958. Post graduation, he embarked on a 35 year career with La Joya ISD, where his passion for sports thrived. Early in his professional career, Macario made lasting contributions to the district’s sports program as a Health and Physical Education supervisor, Head Basketball Coach, Head Track Coach and Head Football Coach. One of his proudest achievements was guiding his student athlete to a 1st place finish in the state level 800 meter dash, marking a historic moment for the La Joya district.

Macario continued his educational goals and earned a Master’s degree at Texas A & M University allowing him to impact many educators as an administrator and assistant superintendent. Macario’s dedication to the school district extended beyond his coaching and educational leadership. He played a vital role in the Bronco League for 25 years where he raised funds for graduating seniors and supported young athletes in achieving their goals and dreams. After his retirement, Macario enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling to casinos and ranching.

Macario married his high school sweetheart, Leonor Carrillo and was deeply devoted to her for 66 years. He leaves behind his grateful wife and beloved children, Ruben (Yvette) Garza, Mary Ella (Michael) Garcia, Raymond Garza, Rita (Antonio) Uresti; his grandchildren, Steven, Eric, Charlotte, Rita, Michelle, and Anthony; his great grandchildren, Elle, Allison and Leilah.

He is also survived by his youngest and loyal brother, Eleuterio Garza, Jr. and his wife, Delia, sister in law, Domitila Garza and numerous nieces and nephews who treasured his presence in their lives.

Macario was a kind, giving soul with a strong resolve. He spent his lifetime doing good for others and always helping everyone he knew. We know he did what he set out to do and did it in the most remarkable way. His memory will forever be an enduring source of strength, love and inspiration.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Santa Rosa De Lima Catholic Church in Benavides, Texas. Interment will follow at Benavides Cemetery in Benavides, Texas.
