Roy Allen Smrkovsky

November 14, 1944 - May 22, 2024

Memorial services for Roy Allen Smrkovsky, age 79, of Schulenburg, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the First Methodist Church in Schulenburg.

Roy was born on November 14, 1944, to Rudy and Louise Smrkovsky. Born and raised in Schulenburg, Texas, Roy attended Schulenburg High School where he participated in numerous activities such as FFA, football, and track and field. Roy and his siblings, Mary Smrkovsky Carlton and Bobby Smrkovsky, grew up on the family farm where they raised cattle and other livestock. Roy was a cattleman at heart and loved roping and trail rides.

Upon graduation, Roy attended Texas A&M University, became a member of the Corps of Cadets, and received a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education in 1967.

Roy took a commission into the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant and served from 1967 to 1969, most of which was spent in Vietnam. After returning home, Roy took a job selling steel for United Steel in Tyler, Texas. Living in Tyler, Roy spent much of his free time fishing on Lake Tyler and Lake Palestine, tying custom rods and making fishing lures.

In 1980, Roy reconnected with his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Carolyn Niesner. Roy and Carolyn moved back to their hometown of Schulenburg in 1981 and were married in 1982. Roy took over his family business, City Meat Market, from his parents and continued as second-generation owner alongside his father Rudy Smrkovsky.

In 1985, Roy and Carolyn had a son named Lukas. After graduating from Texas A&M in 2008, Lukas and his wife Bethany Pesek Smrkovsky moved to Houston to begin their careers. It wasn’t long until the desire to move home and take over the family business set in, and Lukas & Bethany moved back home to Schulenburg in 2014. They have three children, Gage, Wyatt and Abigail Smrkovsky, all of whom were Roy’s pride and joy. Roy enjoyed taking his grandchildren fishing, riding around looking for deer, or just hanging out asking they how their school day went.

Roy was a member of the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 870 of Schulenburg, Masonic Lodge, and Shriners, and was also very involved in the Schulenburg Junior Livestock show. He had a passion for helping children, especially when it came to livestock projects.

Roy is survived by his wife Carolyn Smrkovsky; son, Lukas Smrkovsky and wife Bethany; sister, Mary Carlton and husband Raymond; grandsons, Gage and Wyatt Smrkovsky; and granddaughter, Abigail Smrkovsky; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy and Louise Smrkovsky; and brother, Bobby Smrkovsky.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Rose of Lima Catholic School or the Schulenburg Junior Livestock Show.
