Robert Earl Luhn

July 7, 1936 - December 29, 2023

Robert Earl Luhn, age 87, was called home on 12/29/2023. He was born on July 7, 1936, in Bellville, Texas, to Werno Adolph and Johanna Luhn. In August 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Lange, who preceded him in death in 2000. They had two daughters, Cynthia and Donna. Robert, Sandra, and family spent most of their lives in southwest Houston. In February 2005, he married high school classmate, Vernice (Mikeska) Krumrey, and returned to Bellville to live the remainder of his life.

In 1953, Robert enlisted in an 8-year program in the US Naval Reserve unit in Bellville and completed that program in 1960 as part of the Sea Bee Construction Battalion in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1959, with a degree in Civil Engineering and was a proud Aggie. However, he was even more proud that his daughters and 5 grandchildren had all graduated from Texas A&M as well.

After graduation his career began with Transcontinental Pipeline (Transco), then continued to hold various positions with Weatherby Engineering, Earl & Wright, Jacobs Engineering and Universal ENSCO. Robert was a perfect fit for the engineering profession as he enjoyed solving problems while managing people and projects. In his personal life, he could be counted on to help when something might need a little critical thinking. This could be a repair around the house, helping his children out at their homes, helping a neighbor or a project at church. Robert was an active member at St. John Lutheran Church, serving as an usher and participating in the choir. One thing is certain, Robert liked to stay busy. After retiring, Robert and Vernice loved to travel, dance, and spend time with friends.

Robert is survived by his current wife of 18 years, Vernice; Children Cynthia and husband Mark Hempel and Donna and husband Brian Gammenthaler; Sister-in-Law Carolyn and husband Roy Golan; Grandchildren – Adam and wife Amy Hempel, Katie and husband Gaelen Dalton, Kyle and wife Mandy Gammenthaler, Amy Gammenthaler and Kevin Gammenthaler; Great grandchildren Grant, Emma, Ben, Abby, Jack, Max, Anna, and Jacob; And many nieces and nephews. Robert was loved by Vernice’s children Jerry and wife Nancy Krumrey, Susie Young, Renee and husband Gene Cooper and their families.

He is preceded in death by his first wife Sandra; Parents Werno Adolf and Johanna (Goebel) Luhn; Sister Dorothy and husband Jim Loehr and brother Henry Luhn; Brother-in-Law Bobby and wife Barbara Lange.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the entire staff at Vitas Healthcare for treating Robert with such love, respect, compassion and dignity during his last days.
