Donald Robert "Don" Howard

April 9, 1940 - May 7, 2024

Donald "Don" Robert Howard, 84, of Montclair, NJ, passed away on May 7, 2024, in Wilmington, NC. He was born on April 9, 1940.

Don was an avid fisherman, devoted MSU Spartan fan, and full-time tinkerer. He found joy in beekeeping, wine making, woodworking, gardening, and a host of other hobbies. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor, making everyone he met feel like a lifelong friend.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Lynn Howard; sister Judy Foley; two sons Tim (wife Ashley) and Bill (wife Diana); grandchildren Carson and Bradley; beloved companion, Kalli; and dear friends Jeri and Connie. Don was preceded in death by his older brother, Gibbs.

Don's educational journey included graduating from Montclair High School and earning a B.S. and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University (MSU), M.S. at Texas A&M University, and a PhD at University of Missouri. He was also one of the first veterinarians to complete a yearlong fellowship from the American Council of Education.

Don was an associate professor (surgery) and assistant dean at MSU. While at MSU, he also served as Chair of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He later helped establish the Veterinary School at NC State as Associate Dean and Director for Academic Affairs. He was recognized by MSU as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1994, citing the enduring value of his research and commendable success as an instructor and administrator.

After "retirement" Don and Mary lived in Benzie County, MI on a 20-acre plot of land that he cherished. While there, Don worked part time as a local veterinarian and served 6 years as a county commissioner, the last 4 as chair of the commission.

A private memorial for family and close friends will be held in Wilmington, NC, at a later date. Don's remains will be buried in Benzie County, MI.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to the Jimmy V Cancer Foundation for Research (v.org).

May Don's memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
