Henry Coutret Jr. '55 June 7, 2024 2:11 PM updated: June 7, 2024 2:18 PM

Henry Charles Coutret, Jr.

January 28, 1934 - December 16, 2023

Henry Charles Coutret, Jr. was born on January 28, 1934, in Corpus Christi, TX. He spent most of his youth in San Antonio, Texas where he attended Alamo Heights High School. While in high school, Henry met Therese Maverick Graves whom he would later marry. After graduating high school Henry set off to join the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University where he studied Petroleum Engineering and made frequent trips to Austin to visit Terry at The University of Texas.

Upon graduation Henry married Terry and joined the US Army Signal Corps to fulfill his service obligation relating to his education at Texas A&M. After his time in the Army, Henry began work as a Petroleum Engineer for Mobil Oil Corporation in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Transfers within Mobil took Henry and Terry to Natchez, Mississippi and then to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1960. It was in Natchez that their sons Charles and John were born. In 1968, as Mobil and other large oil companies were consolidating their operations into Houston, Henry and Terry decided to remain in Shreveport rather than return to their native Texas. Drawing on the contacts that he had made within the Shreveport independent oil and financial communities, Henry set out to establish himself as a consulting engineer, eventually forming Coutret and Associates, Petroleum Reservoir Engineers. Over the years, Henry became a very successful petroleum engineer. His reserve evaluation reports (commonly referred to as “Coutret Reports”) were highly regarded in the industry. He also had extensive experience with secondary recovery projects and bromine production.

Henry became an active member of the Shreveport community and never backed away from contributing to organizations that sought his leadership. Throughout his life in Shreveport, Henry was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry for a time. Henry also contributed his time taking on leadership roles at The Rotary Club of Shreveport, The United Way, The Shreveport Opera, Goodwill Industries, Jesuit High School, and The Petroleum Club among other organizations.

Henry was a loving and caring husband and father. He worked hard doing what he loved and gave his family members the freedom to seek their own paths in life. Along with the memory of his kindness and generosity, the example he set will always be with us.

Henry lived the last several years of his life in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he passed away on December 16, 2023. As he had in Shreveport, Henry continued to win the hearts of those he encountered while in Albuquerque.

Henry is preceded in death by his parents Henry Charles Coutret, Sr. and Maxine Eubanks Coutret and by his loving wife Therese Graves Coutret.

He is survived by his sister Mary Gail Coutret Woodman of Houston; his son Charles Coutret and his wife Caroline Atkins Coutret of Albuquerque; his son John Maverick Coutret and his wife Cecile Hennes Coutret of Nokomis, Florida; his grandchildren William Charles Coutret and his wife Jordan Ricciuti Coutret of Littleton, Colorado; Gordon Calder Coutret of Austin, Texas; and Eloise Maverick Coutret of Albuquerque; and his great-grandson Griffin Grey Coutret of Littleton.

A visitation for Henry will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Osborn Funeral Home. The graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday January 5, 2024, at Forest Park Cemetery in Shreveport followed by a funeral service at 3:00 pm at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral.

The family would like to thank Tara Alexander and Kimberly Cory of Shreveport and the staff of MorningStar Senior Living, Albuquerque, for all the loving care they provided to Henry in his final years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to: Rotary Club of Shreveport Foundation, P.O. Box 380, Shreveport, LA 71162.
