Roll Call Tribute

James "Pat" Newman '70 June 18, 2024 4:48 PM updated: June 18, 2024 4:52 PM

James Patrick "Pat" Newman

January 27, 1948 - May 19, 2024

James Patrick "Pat" Newman passed away at home in Colorado Springs, Sunday, May 19, peacefully and near family. He rests in peace now after a brave 20 year battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Pat was born in Beeville, Texas to Daisy and Bert Newman on January 27, 1948. He grew up in Gladewater, Texas, and graduated from the Texas A&M Maritime Academy in Galveston. He married Patricia Antonia "Toni" Ibert in November 1974. This month marked the 50th anniversary of their first date at famed Mickey Gilley's nightclub in Pasadena, Texas.

For most of his career, Pat worked for Sabine Transportation as the Captain of their oil tanker, the Pecos. While sailing near the coast of Florida in November 1990, Pat was responsible for saving the life of a fisherman whose small boat was lost at sea. He also worked as Director of the Marine Assurance department for Valero Energy Company.

Thoughtful, funny, and soft-spoken, Pat was a "people person", and his first devotion was always to his family. From his days at his first job at Brookshires Grocery when he gave each paycheck to his parents to help make ends meet, to working months-long shifts at sea to provide for Toni and his children, Pat always worked hard to help those closest to him.

Pat will be remembered for his sense of humor (and his telling of "Aggie" jokes), his love of his family, and his 6'4" "gentle giant" nature by the many whose lives he touched. He had a zest for life and a fun-loving nature. He loved playing golf with his brother-in-law Buck, playing cribbage with his shipmates, and doing anything with his family - especially traveling, cheering on the San Antonio Spurs, and playing music in their family band, The Band of Newmans.

He is survived by wife Toni; children Jason, and his wife Mimi, Travis, and his wife Stephanie, and Karen, and her husband Armando; siblings Mike, Mary Ann, and Jack; as well as grandchildren Brianna, James, Elizabeth, Annabelle, Timmy, Hazel, Frances, and a grandson on the way in August.

Funeral services will be held at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, 3825 Airport Road, Colorado Springs, CO, 80910.

The family of Pat & Toni Newman wishes to extend our sincerest gratitude to Abode Hospice Home Health and Amada Senior Care, especially to Kayla for her generous help and support.
