Edgar Sleet Dorman, Jr.

September 3, 1923 - November 18, 2023

Edgar Sleet Dorman, Jr. or Dugan as everyone knew him, passed away peacefully, November 18, 2023, at the age of 100 and a World War II Army Air Corp Veteran.

Dugan was born on his family's Bosque county ranch. The 7th child of Edgar Sleet Dorman, Sr. and Lulie Fay Crump Dorman on September 3, 1923. Dugan attended Marivale School in the Fairview community. His sister, Ellen, was his teacher. From a young age he liked girls! One day a girl kissed him on the cheek. He said, "do it again". Teased by other kids, that nickname morphed into Dugan. During WWII, he would write home and mention "Dugan" in his letters and that was code for his parents to know he was OK.

Merrivale school only went to the 8th grade. His mama was determined to see that all her kids got a good education. She rented a house in Waco and moved with her kids so they could go to high school while their father stayed behind to work the ranch. This was all during the great depression. Dugan attended Waco High, China Spring High and graduated from Valley Mills High school in 1942. He enrolled at Texas A&M University in 1942. Because of WWII, his college education was interrupted. Dugan graduated Texas A&M University in 1949.

During WWII, Corporal Dorman served in the 15th Air Force with the 485th Bombardment Group and the 831st Squadron. He was a nose gunner on the consolidated B24. He flew 11 long range strategic bombing missions, based at Venosa, Italy. At some time, his squad reassembled in the US. They had top secret orders to go to Japan. They were told to prepare themselves for possible 90% casualty rates. When the H-bombs ended the war, well, the rest is history. Dugan came home a hero to his family.

After college, Dugan married the love of his life, Dolores Tooke in 1949. He brought his bride of 18 to the Dorman Ranch and partnered with his father. He began a ranching career and legacy that continued until he retired from ranching in 2021. The Dorman Ranch was founded in 1903. As the 4th generation of Dorman ranchers, his son Jim continues a legacy ranching that has lasted for 125 years. Dugan was very proud of that.

Not only was Dugan a rancher but a mailman too. He began a 30 year career with the US Postal Service in 1956 at the Valley Mills post office. He proudly served as a rural letter carrier on a 6 day weekly route. He finished early enough daily to get home and take care of his cattle. Dugan worked hard, and raised up a family, three daughters and a son. His children, grand children and great grandchildren live on the ranch today.

His mother lived to be 100. His sister, Mabel was 104. His sister Fay was 103 and his sister Ellen was 99 and 10 months. He enjoyed competition. He willed himself to live to 100. Dugan was proud of that.

Dugan was a good friend and neighbor. While working at the Valley Mills Post he loved traveling to Colorado with friends Lloyd and Dottie Raburn and their children. He loved hunting, shooting for fun and for competition. He was a very skilled trapper. It was amazing to watch him set a coyote trap like it was art work. He was very good at limiting the number of wild hogs on his ranch. Dugan and Dolores loved spending time with friends Bill and Winnie Turnage, Dorman and Bobbie Sanders playing cards, dominoes, and dancing.

He was preceded in death by his faithful wife of 70 years, Dolores, his daughter, Carol Jean Dorman Jenkins, and grandson Gene Paul Langston.

He is survived by 2 daughters, Linda June Brown of Valley Mills. Laura Jill Dorman of Valley Mills. Son, Jim Dugan Dorman and wife Verna of Valley Mills; 2 granddaughters, Johnna Jenkins, Laguna Park, Lacie Dorman of Valley Mills; 3 grandsons, Jack Langston, of Valley Mills, Daniel Dible and wife Melody of Bastrop, Jonathan Dorman Dible of Valley Mills; 4 great grand daughters and 1 great grandson; many nieces and nephews, and their many descendants.

He was celebrated for a lifetime of achievements, love and legacy. But most of all love. He will be missed but we have this Hope and we Know we will see him again. He was a Lifetime member and Deacon of Fairview Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Friday 11/24 at Foss Funeral home from 5 to 7pm. Funeral services will be Saturday November 25, 11A.M. at Fairview Baptist Church with military graveside to follow under the direction of Foss Funeral Home & Cremation Center.
