Herbert John Wolf, Jr.

June 27, 1932 - June 16, 2024

Herbert John Wolf, Jr. was born in Texas on June 27, 1932, and passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 16, 2024, eleven days before his 92nd birthday. His parents, Ella and Herbert Wolf, Sr., had immigrated to the United States from Germany during the years of rebuilding after World War I. In Houston, they started a family that has flourished and continues to live in the area almost 100 years later. In addition to his wife of 29 years, Sue Pellegrino Wolf, Herb is survived by his sister and her husband, Helen and Paul Flessner. He was also very close to his sons, Mickey and Lane. Through the families of his wife, his sister and brother-in-law, his sons and a network of cousins still residing in Germany, Herb was blessed with many beloved grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

After graduating from Stephen F. Austin High School, he attended Texas A&M University where he had been offered a football scholarship. Notably, during the 1950’s, Herb was playing football for Coach Bear Bryant as one of his famous Junction Boys. At graduation time, Bear Bryant, who was leaving to be Head Coach at the University of Alabama, asked Herb to join him there as an Assistant Coach. Herb chose to decline this offer to pursue a career in architecture with his newly earned bachelor’s degree. Nevertheless, the bonds forged during his time as a Junction Boy led to a lifelong commitment to his alma mater and its football program.

As an architect, Herb worked overseas in the oil industry for many years. Designing, transporting, and erecting habitats in foreign countries for oil and gas work crews took him all over the world. His longest residences were in Nigeria and around Prudhoe Bay in Alaska and Canada. In time, he opened his own firm specializing in the design of commercial and liturgical structures. His interest in and skill at drawing and painting resulted in becoming an accomplished landscape artist in his retirement.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Saint Mary Catholic Church in Plantersville, Texas on June 22, 2024, with Visitation at 9:30 AM, Rosary at 10:00, and Funeral Mass at 10:30 co-concelebrated by Fr. Ed Kucera, pastor, and Fr. Kristopher Fuchs, Herb’s great-nephew. Greg Pellegrino is the Sacristan assisting in the service and Lynette Butler will lead the Rosary. The Burial laying him to rest will follow at the church cemetery. Pallbearers are his sons, Mickey and Lane Wolf, his grandsons, Caston and Cameron Wolf, his nephew, Michael Flessner, and his great-nephew, Jayson Fuchs.
