John Wesley "Wes" Barton, III

March 9, 1952 - June 4, 2024

John Wesley “Wes” Barton, III passed away at his home in Bryan, Texas, Tuesday June 4, 2024, surrounded by his wife and children. Wes was born March 9, 1952 in Dallas, TX to John Wesley Barton, Jr. and Helen Jane Meyers Barton. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1974 and joined the Marine Corps, training in Quantico for officer training, both of which would help define who he was as an adult. Wes was discharged from the Marine Reserves as a Major in 1991. His career was spent in Parks and Recreation and retired as the director in Ruston, LA.

Wes loved helping his three sons which included being a Cub Master, a Scout Director and also a soccer and basketball coach, never missing one of his son's games. He loved studying about the civil war, visiting as many civil war sites as possible. He took that passion and turned it into a Master’s Degree in Civil War History and became a certified park ranger in Vicksburg. Wes was proud of being a marksman in the Marines and enjoyed going to shoot at Cut, proving how good he was even when his family laughed at his shooting stance. He laughed even when Debbie would outshoot him especially when snakes were involved.

Wes had a tremendous sense of humor, and no one was immune to his pranks, including his kid’s friends. He had a saying "the coldest thing in the world is rain on a bald man's head" which became truth to his balding friends! Wes was a proud father and adored his grandchildren who called him "Grumps". He was a good man and his loss will be felt by family, friends, and acquaintances for a long time to come. Wes was a large and impactful presence in many lives.

Wes is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Debbie Knox Barton; son, Jake Barton and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Joshua, Konnor, and Avery; son, Kevin Barton and wife, Tracie; son, Luke Barton and wife, Ashley; grandchildren, Kyndal and Hunter. He was preceded by his father, John Wesley Barton, Jr.; mother, Helen Jane Meyers Barton; and brother, James Otis Barton.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park in Crockett, located at 1601 N. 4th St., Crockett TX 75835.
