Gordon Lee Smith
March 21, 1961 - May 21, 2024
Gordon Lee Smith, 63, passed away in Paducah, KY on May 21, 2024, while traveling home on his motorcycle, when he was struck by another vehicle. This is an unfortunate reminder for drivers to always look twice.
He was born in Pullman, Washington, and moved to Martin, Tennessee, as a child. Gordon graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin and earned his PhD from Texas A&M University.
Gordon's career was marked by significant contributions to the food and Agriculture industries, having worked with Sara Lee, Conagra, and Kansas State University. He was also a dedicated board member of the Institute of Food Technologists. He influenced many in the field of food science including his son and daughter, who followed in his footsteps. He had recently retired to Kuttawa, Kentucky.
Gordon had a solid faith in Christ and was always active in the church. He was an avid marathon runner, a business adventurer, an Eagle Scout, and a mentor to many. Gordon had a large personality and a love for debate; he was never in a quiet room and brought energy and enthusiasm wherever he went.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Melinda Smith; his two children, Kristin (Tyler Hayes) and Aaron (Dakota), both of Omaha; and his cherished grandson, Isaac Smith. He also leaves behind his parents, R.A. and Elsie Smith of Martin, and his sister Kathy (Ricky).
To honor Gordon's legacy, the family suggests memorial donations be made to University of Tennessee-Martin (College of Agriculture and Applied Science), reflecting his passions and commitments.
Gordon's life was characterized by his devotion to family, his work, his faith, and his enthusiasm for living life to the fullest. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
