James Earl "Jim" Stewart 

December 9, 1938 - June 17, 2024 

James Earl Stewart, age 85, of Atlanta, Texas, died Monday, June 17, 2024 in Texarkana, Texas. Although he was a lifelong Cass County resident, he was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on December 9, 1938 to Mack and Kate Wommack Stewart.

Jim graduated high school in McLeod and went on to Texas A&M University in 1956 to become a civil engineer, to which he will always be remembered for being a proud fighting Texas Aggie. He began a career with the Texas Highway Department and enjoyed his time there as a Right of Way Engineer and eventually the head of the ROW section until 1977. During this time he served a year on active duty for the U.S. Army, married Emmie Lou Thompson and fathered Amy and Kat Stewart. In 1978 he began employment with Fluor in Saudi Arabia and worked in many countries until his retirement.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Emmie Lou Thompson Stewart; daughters, Amy Lummis, Kat Handy; and his parents.

Jim is survived by his son in law, James Handy and wife Ginger; four grandchildren, Alexander Stewart Handy (who is following in his footsteps at Texas A&M), James Nicholas Handy, Philip Michael Handy, Maximus Stewart Handy; and a host of close friends and other family.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Friday, June 21, 2024 at Laws Chapel Methodist Church, under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service, with Rev. Mike Akin officiating. Visitation will be 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Hanner Funeral Service. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
