J. P. Brannen, a resident of New Mexico since 1963, died on June 20, 2024. He was a mathematics teacher. He taught high school math and physics for four years and mathematics in universities for 8 years. He retired from Sandia Labs after 24 years, 9 months, and 14 days.
Born in Texas in 1927, he entered the Navy V-3 pilot training program in 1945. Later he graduated from Texas A&M University in 1949 with a BS degree. He received an MS from Sam Houston State in 1956, and a PhD in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1962.
He was a national lecturer in biomathematics for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. In 2002, the Board of Regents of the University of Texas at Austin established in his name a graduate fellowship for excellence in mathematics.

He is survived by his daughter Anne and her wife Laura; his sons Carl and James; his grandchildren Ambergris, Courtney, and Joseph; his great-grand daughter Arabella; his sister Frances; and her children Ross and Julie, Karen and Sam, and Patrick and Nelda.
