At age 17, he made one of the better decisions of his life catching a ride out of Electra to Stephenville, Texas to start school at John Tarleton College.
After 2 years attending college there, he transferred to Texas A&M University in College Station, where he joined the Corps of Cadets. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1951 with a BS in Industrial Engineering. He was always a true Aggie and was extremely proud of his time at Texas A&M and in the Corps of Cadets.

In 1964, he started The Haltom Company in the utility room of his home in West Houston. He grew the company over the years and continued to run it until he finally retired in his late 60s.
Hal was very active his entire life, playing golf and tennis, sailing, running, and walking. He spent more than 20 years racing sailboats named Cayuse on Galveston Bay. He really enjoyed following the Aggies in all sports, including the Aggie baseball team's recent run at the national championship. He also was very active in his church, Chapelwood UMC, and participated in many classes and activities in the church, including prison counseling and ministry.
He was always very committed to his family. He was married to his wife for 58 years and loved being around his grandkids and great grandkids.
