Stewart "Ron" McLeod '60 August 19, 2024 12:36 PM updated: August 19, 2024 12:42 PM

Stewart Ronald "Ron" McLeod

December 4, 1938 - August 5, 2024

Ron was born in Charleston, WV, and died in Portland, OR, but spent most of his adult life in Texas. He considered himself a Texan and was convinced Blue Bell was the best ice cream ever made.

Ron moved to Port Arthur with his parents at an early age. He attended Port Arthur schools, then A&M College of Texas (as it was known then), graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1960. He served in the Texas National Guard for several years.

Banking in one form or another was his life’s work while living in various Texas cities including Houston, where Ron and his first wife had his only child, Stewart.

While working in Beaumont, he met Sharon Poynor, and they married two years later in 1986 in Houston. He was welcomed by Sharon’s two adult children and eventually their spouses and children.

Ron enjoyed playing golf and rooting for the Texas Aggie football team and LA Dodgers. He never passed up a piece of pecan pie or dish of ice cream, preferably preceded by a good BLT.

Ron and Sharon sought out colorful fall leaves in Canada and New England several times, and he particularly enjoyed their trips to Paris and Ireland. Closer to home they attended symphony and choral performances and watched many musicals on stage and screen.

He liked to read military history and donated his extensive collection of the books on that subject to the Corps Library at Texas A&M.

After Ron’s retirement from banking, they moved to Oklahoma City, home of Sharon’s extended family, and finally to the Portland area. There he found golf courses that were green all year ‘round which allowed him to play often. He followed the stock market daily until his Lewy Body dementia diagnosis in 2020.

Ron was predeceased by his parents John W. and Mary Alice McLeod. He is survived by Sharon, his wife of 38 years, and his son Stewart and wife Annie of Dallas, TX, and his treasured grandchildren Kylie and Miles.

Ron’s final resting place will be in the Aggie Field of Honor Cemetery in College Station, Texas so he can spend eternity facing Kyle Field.
