Marvin Fletcher Jr. '69 September 11, 2024 10:23 AM updated: September 12, 2024 10:15 AM

Marvin Hall Fletcher, Jr.

May 21, 1947 - September 4, 2024

Marvin Hall Fletcher, Jr. was born in Austin, Texas on May 21, 1947, and passed away on September 4, 2024. Although he was born in Austin, he always liked to say he left as soon as he could as he was destined to be a Texas Aggie!

Marvin is survived by his wife, Barbara, son Marvin H. Fletcher, III, "Trey", daughter-in-love Becky, and beloved grandchildren: Megan Elizabeth Fletcher and Corporal Andrew Hall Fletcher, USMC. He is also survived by his sister Nancy Hopper and brother Sterling Fletcher (Cindy) and by his nieces and nephew: Laura Schlameus, Aaron Ace Schlameus, Bonnie Fletcher Downs, and Grace Fletcher. Marvin was predeceased by his infant daughter, Courtney Lynn Fletcher, and his parents, Marvin H. Fletcher, Sr. and Mary McClendon Fletcher.

As an Army brat, Marvin moved often with his family during his early years -- from Texas, to Maryland, Germany, Seattle, Formosa (Taiwan), Arizona, and finally to San Antonio where he attended MacArthur High School. Marvin attended Texas A&M University, joining the Corps of Cadets as a member of E-2 (the mascot company). He always said no one told him and his buddies that their "fish year" was the first year that being in the Corps wasn't mandatory! He dearly loved A&M and graduated in January 1970 with a degree in political science and a commission in the U.S. Army.

Lt. Marvin H. Fletcher, Jr. married Barbara Buswell in January 1970 in San Antonio, Texas. They loved to talk about their MYF friendship at St. Andrew's Methodist in San Antonio, which blossomed into love while she was at SMU and he was at Texas A&M. Their first three years of marriage were spent in Amberg, Germany while Marvin served as an armor officer in the 3/2 Armored Cavalry Regiment, guarding the border between Germany and Czechoslovakia. After his Army discharge, they spent four years in Richardson, TX, before moving to Houston in 1977. In 2014, they moved to Round Rock, TX to be close to Trey and his precious family.

Marvin had many occupations after leaving the Army: customer relations supervisor, dry cleaning chain manager, and insurance sales. He finally reached his true calling as a high school teacher for nine years before retiring.

Marvin always loved to travel and always needed to be planning the next trip or two. Marvin and Barbara traveled extensively in Europe while stationed in Germany, and later took many trips throughout both West and Eastern Europe, including a whirlwind trip with Trey to show him his birthplace. Marvin often accompanied Barbara on her business trips to London, taking advantage of the time to do even more sightseeing. Marvin and Barbara also traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada, with Marvin visiting all 50 U.S. states.

Marvin loved sports -- playing and watching. He played tennis well into his 70s, league basketball in his 30s-40s, and more recently became a pool shark (sharing that skill with church youth). He was an angler – a bass fisher, while not always a catcher! All of these increased his friend base. Marvin never met a stranger, believing everyone had a story to tell and wanting to hear their stories, whether in an elevator, standing in line waiting for a football game or from his hospital bed. He was known for his sense of humor and jokes that he would tell as occasion provided.

Marvin adhered to the John Wesley admonition to "Do All the Good You Can " His volunteer activities included: mission trips to Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica, south TX, and Tennessee; Texas A&M 1969 Class Agent 1994-2009; and Past President of Copperfield Rotary Club. He volunteered with C.A.M.P. (Caring Aggies Mentoring Program), A&M Fish Camp, Senior Access Drive a Senior program, Round Rock Area Serving Center, and as an election poll worker, and TaxAide volunteer. He organized MacArthur 1965 class reunions and tennis and pool tournaments.

A celebration of Marvin's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at First United Methodist Church Round Rock, 1004 N. Mays, Round Rock, TX 78664. Marvin's final resting place will be in the Fletcher family plot in Waller, TX.
