Edmund Lee Gates

August 9, 1955 - September 7, 2024

Edmund Lee Gates, 69, passed away on September 7, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on August 8, 1955, in Freer, Texas, to Lee and Valda Daughtrey Gates.

Edmund was preceded in death by his father, Lee M. Gates. He is survived by his mother, Valda Gates, his brother, Jim L. Gates (Shanna) of Pearsall, and his two sons, Mason Gates and William “Will” Gates, along with their mother, Melody Langston (Daniel).

A proud graduate of Freer High School in 1973, Edmund attended Texas A&M University in College Station, where he was a dedicated member of B Company and spent four years performing with the Fighting Texas Aggie Band, Infantry Band, and Maroon Band. His senior year, he served as a member of the Parsons Mounted Cavalry. Edmund graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education.

During his high school years, Edmund was actively involved in the Freer Buckaroo Band, ran track, and competed in the Texas Youth Rodeo Association (TYRA), where he excelled in calf roping and earned several awards, including saddles and buckles.

After completing his studies at Texas A&M, Edmund moved to Houston to begin his career as a Landman with Exxon Company USA. It was during this time that he met and married Melody, and together they welcomed their two sons. In 1988, the family moved to Uvalde, where Edmund served as Vice President of First State Bank of Uvalde. Over the years, he worked with various companies in the heavy equipment and energy industries.

Edmund had a deep love for woodworking, particularly carving figurines, and was known for his skill and creativity. He also enjoyed playing golf and riding his motorcycle. In his later years, he looked forward to retirement and the opportunity to spend more time with his sons and reconnect with old friends.

Honoring his wishes, Edmund’s ashes will be spread over a ranch, a place close to his heart. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to the charity of your choice or to Jackson's Brush Puppy Rescue, P.O. Box 761, Pearsall, Texas 78061.
