September 19, 1940 - September 6, 2024
Milton Paul Witt, Jr., affectionately known as “Witt”, passed away on September 6, 2024 at the age of 83.
Witt was born in Beaumont, Texas on September 19, 1940 to Milton and Laura Witt. He grew up in Eagle Pass, Texas where his parents were both educators. He graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1958. Witt found his love of golf at a young age and was an avid player throughout his life. He had many stories and fond memories of his time living on the border, learning to fly, and being part of the school band where his father was the director. The Witt family was devoted to the United Methodist Church throughout their lives.
After high school, Witt attended Texas A&M University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in 1962. He was a member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band and had many fond memories he shared of his time there. He remained active with the band and Corps of Cadets throughout his life.
After graduation, he joined the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant. Witt was an aviator in the 114th Aviation Company. He served in the Vietnam War where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for exceptional bravery while under fire and an Air Medal with Four Silver Oak Leaf Clusters. He was Honorably Discharged as a Captain in May of 1969.
Witt joined Bell Helicopter as a Test Pilot and moved to Irving, Texas. He soon met Gail Scott and they were married in June of 1967. They had their twin daughters, Laura and Lynda, in August of 1968. Witt and Gail enjoyed 52 years of marriage before Gail’s passing in June of 2019.
Witt received his Masters Degree from TCU in August of 1971 and was inducted into MENSA in January of 1980. He spent the next 25 years dedicated to making a difference in the field of Education. He filled various roles including Math Teacher, Principal, and Curriculum Director during his career.
He made the decision to retire at 55 and move to Houston to be close to his grandchildren, Emily and Joey. He was a devoted grandfather and there are many fond memories of their time together, especially the summer trips camping at State and National Parks.
Witt is survived by his daughters Laura Witt and Lynda Kohler with her husband John Kohler; his two grandchildren Joey Reich and Emily Hale with her partner Josh Kirby; and his great granddaughter Stevie Hale Kirby.
A memorial service and interment will be held at the Houston National Cemetery on December 9, 2024 at 9:45 AM. Please pull into lane 2 by 9:35 AM. In lieu of flowers, Witt’s wishes were that memorial contributions to be made to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation.
