Glen Tate '73 September 19, 2024 12:23 PM updated: September 19, 2024 12:29 PM

Glen Allen Tate, DVM

February 25, 1948 - August 29, 2024

Glen Tate was born February 25, 1948, to parents Harold and Maxine Tate in Corpus Christi, Texas. He passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

His early years were spent on a small acreage outside of Victoria, Texas. He then moved with his family to his deceased grandfather’s ranch outside of Devine. There he developed his lifelong love of all animals great and small, but especially horses and cattle. After graduating from Devine High School, he attended Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University), receiving a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in 1970. He was accepted into Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1973.

After successfully owning and operating two veterinary practices in Bow Island, Alberta, Canada and Lytle, Texas, he then started his second career in the cattle business. He enjoyed much success in the development and breeding of heifers, having the highest selling Brangus heifers in many special replacement female sales.

A lifelong horseman, Glen especially treasured the friendship of many team ropers and was an avid fan of rodeo, having attended rodeos in Calgary, Pendleton, Prescott, Cheyenne, and of course San Antonio, Houston, Fort Worth, and San Angelo.

Dr. Tate had many friends in the cattle business but especially enjoyed his involvement with the South Central Texas Independent Cattlemen’s Association.

Glen is survived by his wife of 55 years Diana and three children, Justin, Jennifer, and Gaylyn. Glen especially loved family time with his six grandchildren, Lane, Bradley, Tyler, Taryn, Dalton, and Josie; as well as 3 great-grandchildren, Cohen, Stevie Lynn, and Lottie Jane.

Dr. Tate was preceded in death by his brother Gordon Lynn Tate and is survived by his sister Sharon Kay Knapp.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wilson County Cowboy Church building fund, 100 Hickory Run, La Vernia, TX 78121; or to the South Central Texas Independent Cattlemen’s Association scholarship fund, 200 W. San Antonio St., Lockhart, TX 78644.

A celebration of life will be held at the Wilson County Cowboy Church in La Vernia, on Saturday, September 28, from 1-4 p.m.
