Billy Dan Kamp
February 9, 1936 - August 5, 2024
Billy Daniel “B. Dan” Kamp was born on February 9th, 1936, in Sudan, Texas, to Raymond Daniel Kamp and to Ida Julia (nee Farr) Kamp, and passed away on August 5th, 2024, in Trophy Club, Texas, at the age of 88 years old.
Dan grew up on a farm outside of Sudan, Texas, with his parents and brother, and attended school there. He received his Bachelor's degree in 1957 and his Master's degree in 1966, from Texas Tech University, and his Doctorate in 1973, from Texas A&M University. Dan was employed as an Associate Professor at Texas A&M University, from 1974 to 1982, and Head of Sea Grant College Education Marine Advisory Services, Texas A&M. He held various other positions as Assistant Director of Fairfax County Park Authority in Virginia, later as Parks and Director of Lubbock, Texas, and Chief Operating Officer, Kansas City, Missouri Parks, Recreation and Boulevards. He ended his career before retirement as Director of Parks and Recreation Management and Planning Strategies at Bucher Willis and Ratliff Corporation. He served in the military reserves from 1958 to 1964.
His most recent work was chairing the Legacy Committee for a book detailing the Southwest Park and Recreation Training Institute, where he attended yearly workshops/conventions for over 50 years as President, advocate and a sundry of other positions. The publishing of the book is to be completed before the institute next meets in February of 2025. His personal interests were travel, history of parks and gardens, landscape architecture, archaeology and horticulture. He loved Texas Tech University and avidly watched all sports. He was recently active with the curriculum reconstruction of the Texas Tech Department of Landscape Architecture. He received many various awards and accommodations over the years, and was most proud of receiving the Texas Tech University College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Distinguished Alumni Award 2019.
Dan had a dry humor and the recipients were his staffs at various positions. One of his staff members wrote down all his quips (abridged and unabridged) over the years and to his surprise, published them in a book called Kampisms.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Daniel Kamp and Ida Julia Kamp, by his older brother, Raymond Kamp Jr., and by his daughter, Heidi Lynn Kamp.
Dan is survived by his wife, Maxine (nee Schaefer), by his daughter, Holly Kamp, and by his nephews, Bill Kamp, Jim Kamp, and niece, Kathy Tinsley.
