Roger Edgar Sage, Jr.
May 29, 1956 - August 16, 2024
Roger Edgar Sage, Jr., went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 16, 2024.
Roger was born in Enid, Oklahoma on May 29, 1956, to Roger E. Sr. and Della Dale Baxter Sage. He was raised with his three siblings in Longview, TX, where he graduated from Pine Tree High School in 1974. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Texas A&M University in 1978. While at Texas A&M, Roger met the love of his life, Carol Lynne Meyerdirk, and they were married on March 17, 1979. Roger and Carol raised their three children, Lyndsey, Cody and Garrett, in Longview, where they were active members of the community.
Roger began working with his dad at the family business, Baxter Sales Co., after college and took over in the mid-nineties as the third generation to operate the business. With an innate entrepreneurial mindset, Roger undertook several other business endeavors, including ProMotions of East Texas and Elite Refinishing. His passion was to impart his business knowledge on others as well as develop leaders who made positive contributions to the community. In addition to being a member of several professional organizations, Roger also served the community through his involvement with the The Rotary Club of Longview.
Roger will be remembered most for his deep and abiding love for Christ. Throughout his life and especially the past year, nothing took his joy away. He served as an example of steadfast faithfulness to anyone who knew him and, in every way, tried to honor the example Jesus set for us. Roger was an active member of First Baptist Church Longview for most of his life, where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, and directed Royal Ambassadors, among other roles.
Roger was an avid runner, participating in numerous marathons from Boston to Houston. He made life-long friends through his love of running and spent many early mornings running with his group, affectionately known as “The Pack of Fools.” In his later years, Roger could be found riding his tractor on his land, cheering on the Texas Aggie baseball team or trying new recipes on his smoker. His greatest joy, though, was his role as “Big Dad” to his six grandkids. Roger’s love for his family was deep and impactful. He was a devoted family man, who sought to instill the values he lived by in his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on through them.
Roger was preceded in death by his mother; survived by his father, Roger Edgar Sage, Sr., his wife, Carol; three children: Lyndsey (Chris), Cody (Sarah Beth) and Garrett (Lauren); three siblings: Robin, Rosemary (Chip) and Raymond (Richard); and six grandchildren: Sadie, Colton, Lorelei, Lilah, Ruby and Lucas.
Roger will be honored on Saturday, August 24th at 2 pm at First Baptist Church of Longview, where all who knew him will celebrate his life. The Sage family appreciates all who have reached out and shared stories of how Roger touched their lives and impacted them for Christ. They wish to share a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Texas Oncology as well as Heartsway Hospice who walked so closely with us this past year.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Catch the Vision International, a charity committed to helping others and sharing the love of God with the world and of which Roger was an active member of the board. For this charity, please direct any donations to the First Baptist Church of Longview in honor of Roger. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Rader Funeral Home, Longview.
