George R. "Richard" Meadows
July 19, 1939 - August 18, 2024
Dean Emeritus, College of Letters and Science, Professor of Economics, and former Chair of Economics Department at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, died August 18, 2024 following a long illness, which he faced with his usual quiet patience. Adored husband of 47 years of the Rev. Constance Barrett.
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, Richard grew up in Houston. He attended Texas A&M University and graduated as Brigade Commander of the largest of five brigades. He was given the Ross Volunteer Company Award in both his Junior and Senior years (one of only two cadets to ever have received the award twice). The Ross Volunteer Company is an historic and honorary elite drill unit and honor guard, and the granting of the award is decided by a vote of the Cadets.
Richard served for two years as a Lieutenant in the US Army, in the Big Red One, First Infantry Division, Field Artillery, and as C.O. of Headquarters Battery of the Fifth Howitzer Battalion. He then worked in the oil business in Texas before earning his PhD in Economics from Washington University, St. Louis.
Further survived by his sister Jeanne Stovall of Tyler, Texas, and children Christopher G. Meadows, Yonason Alexandre Meadows, and Elizabeth Meadows Kyle; as well as the caregivers and staff of Silverado Care Center who also loved him.
Private interment: Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
