James M. "Jim" Jeter
August 9, 1947 - September 12, 2024
James (Jim/Jimmy) M. Jeter, a proud member of Texas A&M University's Class of 1970, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the VA Home not far from his home in Madison, Mississippi after a long, valiant fight against Alzheimer’s Disease. He leaves a legacy of service, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his community and country. Born August 9, 1947, in Long Beach, CA, the second child of John T. and Marguerite (Donnelly) Jeter. Jimmy was a man whose life was marked by both personal and professional achievements that touched the lives of many. He graduated in 1965 from Ore City High School where he was an outstanding athlete and awarded many personal and academic honors. The Class of 1965 was the first class to have gone all four years — 9th through 12th grades to the newly established high school in Ore City (Upshur County), Texas.
A United States Army veteran, he proudly served his country with honor and distinction and he was chosen to be a member of the US Army baseball team where he won several awards. His time in the military reflected his deep sense of duty, a trait that he carried with him throughout his life.
After completing his service, Jim continued his dedication to leadership and education by working with several esteemed institutions. He was a long-time employee of Texas A&M University beginning as Director of Intramural Sports and then served over 25 years at the Association of Former Students where he contributed to the storied Aggie spirit, fostering a sense of community and pride among fellow Aggies. His work extended to Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, TX and St. Dominic Hospital, Jackson, MS where his professionalism and compassion were felt by colleagues and those he served.
He is remembered for his strong work ethic, love of God (he proudly testified that he was Redeemed), love for his alma mater and his family. He was a man who believed in giving back, always seeking to support and uplift those around him. He never met a stranger and his dedication to service was not confined to his career but was reflected in the kindness and generosity he extended to his family, friends, and community.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, J.T. Jeter III. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 23 years, Karen Arcury Jeter; son Jonathan Jeter (Danielle), grandsons Kade, Garran and Gunner Jeter, and daughter, Katie Jeter, all of Austin, TX. Stepson, Colton McCulloch (Amanda), step-grandsons, Cole and Cooper McCulloch of the Bryan-College Station, TX area, and Caylon McCulloch (Britton), step-granddaughters, Everleigh, Sawyer and Hadley McCulloch of Madison, MS. Jimmy also leaves behind to cherish his memory his five remaining siblings Theresa Jeter, of College Station, TX; Bob Jeter (Deborah) of East Mountain, TX; Don Jeter (Laura) of Kilgore, TX; Jack Jeter (Denise) of Hallsville,TX, and Jayne Jeter-Green of Fort Worth TX. As well as a host of nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews, and many cousins from across the country. His family, friends, and a grateful community will forever honor his memory. His life was one of quiet, steadfast dedication to the values he held dear—service, discipline, and love for others.
May he rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations.
