Henry Fletcher Lyle, Jr.

October 7, 1937 - October 10, 2023

Henry F. Lyle was born on October 7, 1937, in Dickinson, Texas. He grew up in the Houston area where he graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1955. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston and a master’s degree from the New School in New York City. On November 29, 1969, he married the love of his life, Mary Helen Booth of San Antonio, Texas.

Henry was a natural-born and passionate educator, devoting most of his professional career to teaching and mentoring a generation of Texans. Henry’s impact as an educator was felt outside the classroom as he led debate teams, chess clubs, gifted-and-talented students, and coached tennis and soccer.

Always thirsty for knowledge, Henry was an avid reader who would put his learnings to use, whether debating Civil War history with a friend or rebuilding a busted VW carburetor.

Henry was also a sports fan and enjoyed following his alma mater UH and especially the Astros. He enjoyed playing tennis, running and spending time coaching his kids in too many sports to mention here. Fun loving and adventurous, Henry loved the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and camping.

He was a valued choir member with a rich baritone voice. He played the 12-string guitar and often entertained his children with his version of children’s songs.

Henry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary who will always remember his carefree and venturesome personality that gave her many happy memories during their 54 years of life together. Also surviving are his children, Greg, Chris, Trey and wife Lisa and Becky and husband Rory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Fletcher Lyle and Ethel Lucille Moore Lyle.

Those wishing to make memorial gifts may do so to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105, www.StJude.org
