Sam Bernard Zuckero, Jr.
November 19, 1926 - September 7, 2024
Sam Bernard Zuckero, Jr, was born on November 19, 1926, to Sam Bernard Zuckero and Nancy McQueen Zuckero in Houston, Texas. He went to Heaven on September 7, 2024, from Austin, Texas.
Sam enjoyed sports, and played high school football at Jeff Davis High School in Houston. After graduation, in 1944, he enlisted in the US Army. Since he was not yet 18, they sent him to Oklahoma A&M for a semester. Once he was of age, they inducted him into the Army. After basic training, his unit trained for the invasion of Japan. They took ship for the Philippines. The war ended without the necessity of invading Japan, but he was sent there to aid in the occupation. While he was there, he took part in a football game between two divisions. Since it was about January 1st, it was dubbed the Tokyo Rose Bowl. Sam was discharged from the Army in June of 1946, and returned to Houston. There he met Dorothy Poole at a Camp Peniel event. They were married on December 14, 1947, and were together for 70 years. They raised Dorothy's sister, Gloria, after the death of her parents when she was eight, had one daughter, Rebecca (Becky), born in 1951.
Sam was always interested in engineering, and enrolled in Texas A&M University in 1954, graduating in 1957 with a degree in civil engineering. He worked in Houston much of his career, finally going to work for Union Pacific Railroad, from which he retired in the 80s. He was active in his retirement, volunteering for Camp Peniel in Houston, and then later moving to Marble Falls and, along with Dorothy, volunteering at Camp Peniel there. Sam and Dorothy were also very active in their church, and spent a good amount of time with their grandchildren, taking them to Colorado on vacations and loving them all the time.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his five brothers and his sister, and by his wife, Dorothy. He is survived by his daughter, Becky Hunt, son-in-law, Glenn Hunt, grandchildren, Lorna Hunt, James Hunt and wife Miranda, Lynn Hunt and husband Matt Georgia, Ethan Hunt and wife Allie, and great-grandchildren, Penny, Hannah, and Lizzy Hunt, and by his sister-in-law, Gloria Pearson, and many nieces and nephews. All will miss him very much.
There will be a Memorial service for Sam at Fellowship Baptist Church on Saturday, September 28, at 11am.
