Homer Douglas Underwood, Sr.
August 18, 1942 - September 29, 2023
Homer Douglas Underwood, Sr. passed away on Friday September 29, 2023, at the age of 81.
Doug, the eldest of 5 children, was born to Homer and Jessie (Simonton) Underwood on August 18, 1942, in Coleman, TX. Doug never gave up. As a young child he overcame polio. At the age of 16, his father died, and he readily became the man of the house. As a result, Doug went to work in the grocery business, which he loved, and where he became a leader in the industry. He was in the first graduating class of San Angelo Central High School. He proudly attended and graduated from Texas A & M University in 1967.
Doug is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 38 years, Nancy, his sons, Homer Douglas Underwood, Jr, Steven Underwood, and Brandon Underwood. He is also survived by his beloved daughter, Stephanie Arrant.
Doug is also survived by his daughters in law, Sandy Underwood, Gabby Underwood, Johanna Underwood, Allison Williams, and son-in-law, Tandy Arrant.
Grandchildren Sean Underwood, Jacob Underwood, Erika Castorina and husband Alex, Briana Weatherly, Adam and Rebekah Weatherly, Blake Underwood, Morgan and Eric Portee, Caitlynn Underwood, Benjamin Underwood, Paul Underwood, Shane Williams, Shalee Williams, and Jennifer Vetrano. He is also survived by 12 great grandchildren.
Doug is also survived by his brother Jesse Underwood and wife Earma and his sister Pam Sanders and husband Jimmy Sanders, and sister-in law Ellen Underwood.
Doug also leaves behind a large family of beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents Homer and Jessie Underwood, brothers, John Underwood, and Sam Underwood. Glenn Williams, Jr, son. Robert Lee Hilbus, Sr, father-in-law, and Lucy McAfee, mother-in-law.
Doug believed in Jesus Christ alone for his salvation. He loved faithful, gospel music. Doug was immensely proud of his family and their accomplishments. He was known for his work ethic and determination, even when health complications limited his mobility. Throughout his lifetime his tenacity empowered him to overcome many trials and adversities.
A graveside service will be held at the family cemetery at Brown Ranch Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. Across from Harmony Baptist Church, 608 County Road 354 Coleman, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Knopp Healthcare and Rehab Center and Methodist Healthcare Hill Country Hospice of Fredericksburg, TX.
