George M. Jones
March 14, 1938 - November 6, 2024
George M. Jones, 86, of Lovelady, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 14, 1938, in Wesley Chapel, Texas, to George Lester Jones and Opal Hargrove Jones. George grew up in East Texas, where he graduated from Crockett High School before attending Texas A&M University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. A true Aggie and Century Club member, George remained deeply connected to his alma mater and its community throughout his life. He never sat for an Aggie football game
After his time at A&M, George served his country in the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant at Fort Sill, later joining the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a professional civil engineer. Following his military service and engineering career, he found his calling as a Beefmaster cattle rancher and raised generations of award-winning livestock. George’s love for the land was matched only by his desire to better understand it. His extensive collection of text and guidebooks was never able to collect dust and George often returned to his alma mater for advanced agricultural and horticultural seminars. He was known for his integrity, work ethic, and character.
George was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Gulsby, and husband, James; granddaughter, Alex Gulsby; brothers, Roger Jones, and wife, Kathy of Wichita Falls, Jimmy Jones; as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife of many years, Shirley I. Jones; parents, George Lester and Opal Jones; and sisters, Doris Jones Lane and Nelda Jones McCain.
A service to honor George’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 2024 at Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at the Lovelady Antioch Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Catherine Cochran, the staff at Enchanted Pines Assisted Living, Luminos Hospice, Mary Brooke, and team, for the exceptional care and compassion they provided during George’s final months.
