May 27, 1955 - September 1, 2024
Michael Gene Hughes went to his heavenly home on Sunday, September 1, 2024. Mike was born at Mountain Home AFB in Idaho on May 27, 1955. He was the oldest child born to Marcus and Eleanor Tresenriter Hughes.
Being a military child, he lived in many different states and countries such as Iceland and England. While in England, he found his love for soccer, even traveling to other countries to play.
He graduated from Santa Fe High School in ’73, then attended Blinn College before transferring to Texas A&M University. He graduated from A&M in December of ’77. On January 2, 1978, Mike started work in the Marine Biomedical Department at UTMB Galveston. He worked at UTMB full time until 2012 and then worked part time until 2020. After retiring, Mike dedicated many hours each week volunteering at H.I.S. Ministries.
For more than 30 years, Mike was involved in youth soccer, both coaching and refereeing. He held many leadership positions and helped start the soccer program at Santa Fe High school.
Mike loved Arcadia Christan Church and was very involved in church activities. He served as a deacon in the church and was also a youth sponsor many years ago.
Mike enjoyed traveling and being outdoors, but more than anything he loved spending time with his family and helping others.
He leaves behind his wife of 39 years, Patsy Lively Hughes; daughter Heather Parks and husband Johnathan; son Jason Hughes and wife Taylor; daughter Sarah Hughes; father Marcus Hughes; sister Renee Courtney and husband Kenyon; brothers Gary Hughes and wife Corine, Steven Hughes, and Dean Lowe and wife Donna; grandsons Jesse and Jacob Parks; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mom, Eleanor Hughes.
There will be a Celebration of Life this Saturday, September 7th at Arcadia Christian Church in Santa Fe. Visitation will be from 4-5, and then the service will start at 5.
