Darrell Eugene Martin
March 29, 1937 - November 28, 2024
Darrell Eugene Martin, 87, passed away on November 28, 2024, at his beloved Hill Country cabin home in Camp Wood, TX. He was born March 29, 1937 in Brawley, CA.
He grew up in Edinburg, TX where golf quickly became his avid passion at a young age. At 12 years old, he caddied on weekends at Ebony Hills Golf Course. Later, he participated in junior tournaments throughout TX and neighboring states. As a teenager, he competed impressively against adult players, being recognized on numerous occasions in his hometown newspaper for his gifted ability for one so young.
Darrell attended Texas A&M University on a golf scholarship and proudly remained a loyal supporter of their golf team and program. He was also an enlisted serviceman in the Army Reserves.
Following college graduation, he married Arlyene Prichard, with whom he would devotedly share his life.
He began his career in sales with Chicago Pneumatic Air Tools in the early 1960’s, eventually promoted to the role of regional sales manager over the entirety of their southern business territory, a position which continued until his retirement. Recognized for his performance, Darrell was afforded the special opportunity to play the Pebble Beach Golf Links, which had been a lifelong dream of his.
To those who knew him well and strangers alike, Darrell was warmly good-natured, generous and “down-to-earth” always quick to poke fun at himself. Throughout his life, he maintained his childhood friendships as well as the dear friends made later.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Margaret Martin, his wife, Arlyene, and sister, Shirley Bair. He is survived by his three sons, Troy, Rodney (Tracy) and Keith, grandchildren, Chaney and Bryce; siblings, Sandra Green, Kenny Martin (Margaret) and Debbie (Karl) Kuehn.
Celebration of Darrell’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 14th, 2024, Nelson’s Funeral Home, Camp Wood, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palm Valley Animal Society, PO Box 1829, Edinburg, TX 78540.
