David M. "Max" Moreland

October 2, 1951 - October 15, 2024

David Max Moreland, affectionately known as Max, departed this life peacefully on October 15, 2024, at the age of 73. He was born to Edward Buford Moreland and Gladys Laverne Moreland on October 2, 1951, in Graham, Texas. Max was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a pillar of the community.

Max's love and dedication to his family were unwavering. He is survived by his loving wife, Gail Moreland, whom he married in 2019, his ex-wife, Earline Moreland, and his sister, Dee Moreland Jones (husband, Bob Jones). He leaves behind a legacy in his children, Nicole Mattox (husband, Ryan Mattox) and Jon Moreland (wife, Amie Moreland), as well as his step-children, Adam James (wife, Kim Atwood-James) and Anna Diaz. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Myles, Liam, Kellen, Sterling, Whitley, Ellis, and Orin. Max was preceded in death by his son, James Moreland, who passed away in 1997, as well as his brothers, Shawn Moreland (wife, Susan Moreland) and Mark Moreland (wife, Pam Moreland).

In 1972, Max graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He spent most of his career at Amoco Oil Company and BP, which allowed him to live internationally and embrace his love for travel.

A man of the outdoors, Max found solace in nature and could often be found tending to his garden or backpacking in the National Parks. He loved puttering around his home, watching college football, and sharing his interests with his family and friends, creating many wonderful memories through the years. He enjoyed reading and had a gift for training others in personal finance, living out how to be a good and generous steward in both word and deed. Max truly knew the secret to being content in all circumstances. Known throughout the community as a man of service, Max was always ready to lend a hand. His church was more than a place of worship; it was where he served with dedication, touching lives through his quiet acts of kindness and his unfaltering extension of grace. His dedication to helping others and his strong faith were hallmarks of his character.

Max Moreland leaves behind not only cherished memories but a legacy of service, tireless dependability, and an indomitable, adventurous spirit that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey through life was marked by the love he gave and received, ensuring his spirit lives on in the hearts of many.

A memorial service will be held at Cape Fear Christian Church on Friday, October 25, 2024, at 4:30 pm. A visitation will be held beginning one hour before the service time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation in Max’s honor.
