Robert Lawton Williams, age 86, of Lookout Mountain, TN passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024. He was born on March 27, 1938, in Chattanooga, TN. A dedicated patriot, R.L. devoted much of his life to serving his country, both in the military and as a civilian.
R.L. had a distinguished 20+ year career in the U.S. Army, where he served across multiple branches, including the Infantry, Medical Service, Armor, Inspector General Corps, and General Staff. His service included a year-long deployment to the Republic of Vietnam. He retired with the rank of full colonel (O-6), reflecting his exceptional leadership and commitment.
After his military retirement, R.L. continued to serve in federal roles where he was stationed mostly in San Antonio and Kentucky. His civilian career began at NASA, where he worked for over four years writing and negotiating contracts. He then spent more than 16 years in contracting with the Department of Defense, (CONUS) including six months on deployment in Tikrit, Iraq, at the age of 72. His work brought him to various posts, including the Pentagon and Redstone Arsenal, where he excelled as a contract administrator.
R.L.’s education was as impressive as his career. He attended The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee and a master’s degree from Texas A&M University. He furthered his military education at the U.S. Army War College and completed post-graduate studies in civil engineering.
R.L. was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. His passions were as diverse as his achievements—he enjoyed boxing, flying kites, running, hiking, and swimming. Above all, he loved sports, people, and animals. R.L. embraced life with enthusiasm and kindness, leaving a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him. R.L. lived a life of service, adventure, and joy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Elliott Williams, and nieces Sarah McKenzie, Nancy Stagmaier, and Mary Fritsche.
Graveside services with military honors will be held on Thursday, October 31st, 2024 at Chattanooga National Cemetery with The Rev. Michele Simmons officiating. A reception will be held prior to the service on Thursday, October 31st from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the Talbird Hall at Church of the Good Shepherd, 211 Franklin Rd, Lookout Mtn.
