Henry Verlon Birdwell, Jr., M.D., 98 years old, passed away early September 26, 2024.
Dr. Birdwell practiced general surgery in Fort Worth for 35 years. He was born in Dallas, Texas, raised in Henderson, and is a proud graduate of Texas A&M University and The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where he received his Doctor of Medicine, and met and married the love of his life, Georgia Ann Cooksey. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War. Henry and Georgia had five children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia; and one of his daughters, Carol Ann Birdwell; his parents, Henry V. Birdwell, Sr. and Bessie Mabel Hill Birdwell; and brothers, Gerald Birdwell and Edward Birdwell.
He is survived by his son, David Birdwell and his wife, Cynthia Oberholtzer Birdwell; daughters, Jan Birdwell White and her husband, Ron White, Joan Birdwell Reese and her husband, Jim Reese, and Becky Birdwell Walker and her husband, Mark Walker. Dr. Birdwell has four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He retired to Lake Worth, Texas where he taught water safety and performed in a musical group, "The Modulators". Everyone that met him thought very highly of him. He had a deep faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, which guided him throughout his life.
His services are:
Visitation: 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Greenwood Funeral Home in Memorial Suite C and D, 3344 White Settlement Rd., Fort Worth, Texas 76107.
Funeral Service: 9:30 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2024, in Greenwood's Live Oak Chapel at 3100 White Settlement Rd., Fort Worth, Texas 76107; followed by entombment at Greenwood Mausoleum.
