Lt. Col. Roy Samuel Baty, Jr., U.S. Army Retired, (aged 90) passed away peacefully on July 21st, 2023 after a brief illness. Roy was born in San Antonio, Texas, on September 30th, 1932, to Roy Samuel Baty, Sr. and Viola Stuart Baty. He was a devoted and beloved husband, father, and grandfather to his family. Roy was married to Dorothy Marie Baty, the love of his life, for 66 years. He attended the University of Texas at Austin on an ROTC scholarship, graduating with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Roy completed his formal education at Texas A&M University at College Station, where he received his master's degree in civil engineering.
Roy was a licensed professional engineer and worked continuously as a civil engineer throughout his career. Roy was commissioned in the U.S. Army in 1955 and served for 22 years in the Army Corps of Engineers. Roy oversaw the construction of Minuteman Missile silos in Montana and Nebraska, served overseas tours of duty in Korea, Germany, Thailand, and Vietnam, and served as the Post Engineer at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. His last military assignment was at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. After he retired from the U.S. Army, he worked as the Engineer for Salt Lake County, Utah for 8 years.
Throughout his life, Roy had a wide range of interests and hobbies. Roy was truly a modern-day Renaissance Man and explored his many interests at an expert level. Roy's curiosity and quest for knowledge was unyielding and provided him and his family with a lifetime of projects and exploration. Roy was interested in model aircraft, ham radio operation, metal working, wood working, metal detecting, hunting, skeet shooting, precision shooting, archery, fishing, astronomy, photography, boating, and more. Roy honed his intellectual skills throughout his life and mastered them during and after his professional career.
Roy was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Kathy Lynne and his wife, Dorothy (July 2022). He is survived by his sons, Roy Stuart Baty (Joanne) of Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Reid Samuel Baty (Richard) of Salt Lake City, Utah. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Samuel Roy Baty and Sarah Marie Baty, both of Los Alamos, New Mexico. He will be deeply missed by the entire family. Roy was buried next to his wife and daughter at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
