Roll Call Tribute

Susan "Sue" Harding '81 February 4, 2025 3:46 PM updated: February 4, 2025 3:58 PM

Susan V. "Sue" (Roth) Harding

September 6, 1956 - August 28, 2024

Our beloved Sue passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

Sue is survived by her beloved husband of 41 years, Richard (Chad) Harding, Jr. of Dripping Springs, Texas; sons, Joseph, and Charles (Kelsey); grandsons, Stuart and Samuel, of Austin, Texas; brother, Stephen Roth (Monica); sister, Judith Ryan Olson (Joseph); and brother-in-law, James Calhoun. Sue had 11 nephews and nieces, 22 great nephews and nieces, and 17 cousins.

She was preceded in death by parents, Theodore and Elizabeth (nee Sinclair) Roth; sister, Mary Lou Calhoun; and brother Frank Roth.

Sue was a loving wife, mother, sister, mom-mom, and aunt. She was proud to have been born and raised in blue collar Philadelphia, and she kept strong connections with Philadelphia and nearby Jersey Shore while enjoying life as a Texan for over 25 years.

Her early career pursuits as a petroleum geologist and geological consultant, and later with Chad’s career in geophysics, led them to live in six different states and one foreign country before settling in Houston, and later, the beautiful Texas Hill Country of Austin and Dripping Springs. Sue embraced each change as a new adventure to be lived to the fullest.

Always active, Sue was continuously engaged as a volunteer in community groups, children’s schools, and later an adjunct instructor at Houston Community College. Her final avocation, turned vocation, was as a landscape designer in the Dripping Springs area.

Sue had a strong, lifelong love of the outdoors and nature, and cultivated a deep sense of our interconnectedness with the Divine. This encompassed ecosystems on land and sea, at all scales, from mountain chains to the biomes of our bodies and the soil. God, family, friends, country, plants, wildlife, rocks, minerals, soil, dancing, tennis and yoga were her passions.

A service in Sue’s memory, and in celebration of her life, will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Dripping Springs, Texas at 1:30 PM on Saturday, October 12, 2024. All who knew and loved her are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Sue’s honor.
