Rose Marie Hume

September 15, 1969 - December 7, 2024

Rose Marie Hume Sager of Houston, Texas died suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Rose was born on September 15, 1969, in Baltimore, Maryland to Mary Grace and Scott Hume. Rose was the youngest of 3 children, and after a brief time in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the family settled in Houston, Texas.

Rose grew up loving music and horses. While our parents would not spring for a horse, Rose’s love of music blossomed into playing the flute in the high school band. She loved it so much that she became a Drum Major for the Stratford High School marching band her senior year.

She continued to play her flute after graduation, combining it with her love of singing in the church choir. She was one of the founding families of the Saint Edith Stein Catholic Church in Katy Texas, and she proudly showed her sister where her family signed one of the founding support beams during construction.

Rose attended Texas A&M University in College Station where she earned her Bachelor of Education. While in college she shared a home with her brother Rob and sister Gina who were also attending A&M at the same time. Somehow, they all survived the experience with their love of each other intact! While in college Rose and Rob both joined the Texas A&M Archery team, made lifelong friends and loved archery so much they owned their own archery bows and continued archery after college. One of those archery friends was Curtis, and Rose and Curtis chose each other to marry and build a family together.

Rose and Curtis landed back in Houston after college, where Rose followed her passion for teaching and settled into a full -time career as a GT teacher in the Katy school district. Her passion in the classroom was for science and anything to do with NASA. She loved her students and keenly felt the need to support the public school system and was inspiringly adept and creative in obtaining teaching grants and developing new and engaging programs for her students.

Rose always loved the theater; acting was another of her creative outlets. She performed in community theater whenever she was able, and in 2023 she made the career change from GT to theater teacher within the Katy ISD. It was while working as assistant director during a performance this past weekend that she passed suddenly and unexpectedly, a tragic shock to all who loved her.

Rose loved horses, rode them any chance she could, she even had a favorite horse she loved to visit yearly at a scrapbooking retreat. She loved the “smell of horse.” Her creativity and joy were apparent in all aspects of her life, and her home was filled with loving pictures and scrapbooks of family. She loved board games and was a fierce competitor, an ideal holiday was spent with as much extended family as possible spending the night playing games, eating and drinking. She could quote every word of the Princess Bride, all the original Star Trek episodes and of Galaxy Quest. She was sharp and quick with her humor and had an excellent sense of timing and the ability to read a room, saying her trademark “Any-Hoo” whenever the conversation needed to move on.

Rose was incredibly dedicated to her family. She was a generous, loving and kind mother to her three children, Alyssa, Michael, Zachery, and grandma to her grandson, Matthew. She prioritized them above everything else in her life. She was very close to her mother, Mary Grace, who Rose adored and spent much time with. Rose was kindhearted and welcoming. She always had a beautiful smile and a warm hug for you as soon as she saw you. We will all miss those hugs.

Rose’s life did not turn out the way she or any of us planned. She managed persistent emotional and physical challenges. She was not a constant ray of sunshine. But you could count on the fact that the sun ALWAYS DID come back with Rose, no matter what happened. She regrouped, said “Any Hoo,” and charged back in. She prioritized her family above everything else. And that family was extended to everyone she knew and loved. We are going to miss her so much.

Rose is survived by her children Alyssa, Michael and Zachary; Michael’s wife Kayla; her grandson Matthew; her mother Mary Grace; her Aunt Janice; her sister Gina and her husband Tom; her brother Robert and his wife Darcie; her nephews and nieces Dominic, Julia, Amy, Avery, Austin, Alex; and her former husband Curtis. She was preceded in death by her father, Scott Hume.

A funeral service has been scheduled at Saint Edith Stein Catholic Church in Katy, Texas this Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with reception to follow. All who knew and loved Rose, or wish they did, are invited to attend. The address is 3311 North Fry Rd, Katy, 77449.
