Daren Andrew Brown
May 14, 1969 - February 14, 2025
Daren Andrew Brown, 55, of Bedford, Texas, passed into eternal life on February 14, 2025, after a brave battle with ALS. Born in Sidney, Nebraska, on May 14, 1969, to Mary Phelps and Arlen Brown, Daren lived in various locations as a child until his family settled in Azle, Texas. He was a 1987 graduate of Azle High School. Daren earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Texas A&M University (Class of ’91) as well as a master’s degree in electrical engineering. While at A&M he played on the rugby team and was affectionately known as “Heavy-D” Brown. He was very loyal to his alma mater and enjoyed watching Aggie sports, particularly football and baseball. Daren and Karen jokingly called their home a “house divided” as Karen is a University of Texas graduate.
Daren started his 30-year career as an electrical engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers in 1994. In a demonstration of selfless service and patriotism, Daren served as an electrical engineer and project manager on the Forward Engineer Support Team and was deployed on two separate occasions. The first deployment was in June 2002 where he was stationed in Afghanistan. His daily duties were focused on providing electrical engineering support. His second deployment occurred in January 2004 where he served as a project manager in support of Task Force Restore Iraqi Oil. He retired from the Corps in 2024 as the chief of the electrical section. Daren used his gifts as an electrical engineer outside of the Corps by serving as a missionary in Haiti with Engineering Ministries International. In speaking of this mission trip, Daren said that he learned to be a Christ light, to be jovial under oppression, and to be thankful for blessings when blessings were not available.
Daren was an excellent cook and loved to host small dinner parties. He felt that preparing and sharing a meal with others was a spiritual act of service. An avid reader and history buff, he had an extensive library of books. Favorite outdoor activities were camping, cycling, and kayaking.
In a recent email to his family, Daren wrote, “I have lived a full and purposely led life” and “My successes are measured in my special relationships with family and friends.” He will be remembered for love of others, dry wit, intelligence, perseverance, and fortitude.
Daren is survived by his wife Karen Meador Brown; son Duncan Gabriel Brown; mother Mary Phelps; stepfather Rahim Phelps; father Arlen Brown; stepmother Sue Brown; sister Lara Armstrong; brother-in-law Todd Armstrong; brother Christopher Phelps; sister-in-law Becky Phelps; sister Geri Pagel; brother-in-law Jason Pagel; and many beloved nephews, a niece, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
A celebration of life will be held on March 15, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Church at the Cross in Grapevine, 3000 William D. Tate Avenue, 76051.
