Vincent Brian Canizaro

November 18, 1964 - March 16, 2025

Vincent Brian Canizaro (60) of San Antonio, Texas died unexpectedly on March 16, 2025.

Vince was born in Dallas, Texas on November 18, 1964 to Peter C. Canizaro M.D. and Sandra Brian Canizaro. His childhood was spent in multiple states, beginning in Texas, a few fun years in Seattle, Washington, and then Chappaqua, NY. He graduated a year early from Horace Greeley High School and followed his brother Peter to Texas A&M University in College Station, TX where he obtained the first of many degrees, his Bachelor of Environmental Design and Architecture in 1986. During this time at Texas A&M he studied architecture abroad at La Poggerina in Italy, an experience that left a lasting impact on him. Upon graduation he worked at various architecture firms, moved to Berkeley, CA where he obtained his Masters of Architecture from the University of California in 1992. He eventually returned to Texas A&M where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture in 2000, beginning his academic career. His first academic job was as a visiting professor at the University of Oregon. In 2001, he was recruited to the University of Texas at San Antonio where he spent the rest of his career as a Professor of Architecture, including Chair of the Department of Architecture from 2011 to 2017. During his career he taught many varied classes and studios and published multiple books and scholarly articles. He had a true love and passion for teaching and enjoyed being able to pass along his experience and expertise to the upcoming generation of architects, which along with his children, he felt would be his lasting legacy.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Vince’s greatest accomplishment was being a father to his two children, Alexander and Andrea. He had many varied interests and pursued many activities in his life, a true Renaissance man. He obtained the title of Eagle Scout when younger. He was an avid hiker and camper, and enjoyed trips with his family to Big Bend and Balmorhea among other places. He completed the MS150 bike ride in Texas raising money for the MS Society in his days of biking. He was an accomplished soccer player in his high school days. He had an insatiable love of music from an early age, developing an appreciation of classical music from his parents, a love of rock and roll from his brother and sister, and then his own eclectic discoveries. He would spend hours and hours making tapes (and eventually CDs) for long car trips, and family members, to share the music he loved. He was an amazing chef and enjoyed cooking for friends and family. He was quite the handyman, he could fix most anything that needed repair in the house, as well as undertaking a beautiful renovation of his San Antonio home by himself. He was a talented artist and enjoyed painting, sketching, and creating sculptures, gifting most to others. He also loved his companion animals, having shared his life with many cats and dogs. Vince especially loved watching and supporting his children play sports, Alex playing baseball and Andrea playing softball, as well as their many other activities and never missed an opportunity to tell others of their accomplishments.

Vince was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his children Alexander and Andrea, and their mother Jenny Moore; his siblings Peter C. Canizaro IV, Carolyn Canizaro-Orlowsky, and Janet Canizaro Boring, and their spouses, nieces and nephews; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and countless friends, students, and colleagues. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs Zoe and Nala.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a late date to honor Vince's love of architecture, art, and music.
