Carole Louise (McDowell) Current

Dr. Carole Louise Current (née McDowell), age 76, passed away February 18, 2025, in Metairie, Louisiana. She was born June 8, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri, where she spent most of her childhood before completing high school in Hawaii at Punahou School. Her deep curiosity and intellect led her to pursue multiple degrees, earning a Bachelor’s in Marine Biology from California State University and a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University before going on to obtain both a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from Texas A&M.
Carole began her career as a research assistant at Texas A&M and later worked as an assistant professor at Louisiana State University before transitioning into government service. She spent the majority of her career at the Minerals Management Service, a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior, where she applied her expertise to the study and management of oceanic and coastal resources. She took great pride in her contributions to the field of oceanography.
Beyond her professional life, Carole had a sharp mind and a determined spirit. She enjoyed science fiction and technology and had a particular enthusiasm for Animal Crossing, a Nintendo game she played for many years. She also cared deeply for those closest to her, including her daughter and her long-term companion, Fred, with whom she shared many years of companionship and support.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary McDowell, as well as her brother Robert. She is survived by her daughter, Christina Current Fidalgo, her brother, George McDowell, and her companion, Frederick Philip Heisler, Jr.
In keeping with her wishes, no memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in her memory.
