James Richard "Jim" Bullock
August 23, 1933 - February 13, 2025
James Richard (Jim) Bullock was born to Curtis and Odalene Moore Bullock in Terrell, Texas on August 23, 1933 and passed away on February 13, 2025 at age 91. Jim attended Terrell Public schools where he was on the tennis team, delivered newspapers, ushered at the theaters, and assisted with the family chicken hatchery. At a young age, his family introduced him to the sport of fishing which he continued to pursue with a passion for the remainder of his life. He was a longstanding member of the Irving Christian Anglers bass club with monthly tournaments and almost weekly outings with close friends.
Joining the First Baptist Church in Terrell as a youth led him to later move his membership to the Plymouth Park Baptist Church in Irving in 1964 where he was an usher, and dedicated member of Jerry Christian’s bible study group.
Jim spent two years in the U.S. Army where he was a fire direction control specialist in an atomic missile battalion stationed in Germany.
A fifth generation Texan, he graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree that led to a very satisfying career in the profession. He joined the Dallas architecture firm of Fisher and Spillman in 1966 where he became a principal and vice president in the firm that later became F&S Partners, architects and interior designers. There he sought and led numerous church, municipal, university, and school projects. Significant ones include the Horticulture and Forest Science Building at Texas A&M, the Farmers Branch City Hall, and the Irving Performing Arts Center. After retirement in 1998, he enjoyed occasional lunches with his former business partners Pat Spillman, Ron Shaw, Steve Warrick, and Allen Atkinson. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Texas Society of Architects.
Jim was a dedicated civic volunteer in Irving where at various times he chaired the Parks and Recreation Board, the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Arts Board and the Community Development Corporation. He was also a past president of the Irving Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. Jim volunteered at the Irving Baylor Hospital where he drove the senior van. The Irving city council awarded Jim their High-Spirited Citizen Award in 2001. Jim was also a member of the American Arbitration Association and served two terms on the Dallas County Grand Jury.
Marrying Mary Ellen Bradley in 1954 was a major victory that led to many years of happiness and two children, Bradley Alan Bullock, wife Kelly and daughter Bayley; and Lara Ellen (Bullock) Rodgers husband Steve and son Justin and wife Bethanie all of whom survive him. Jim and Mary loved to travel and did so many times in the U.S., Europe, and other colorful and historic locales. After retirement, Jim traveled to over 30 foreign countries with Mary. Jim was a very loving husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather and thoroughly enjoyed every family celebration. Jim and Mary celebrated their 71st anniversary in January. Their enduring love was an inspiration to all they knew.
