Thurman Alexander Head, the fifth child and only son of Jimmy and Lufa Head, was born in Center City in 1921 and moved with his family to Lometa in 1922. He finished Lometa High School, John Tarleton College in Stephenville, and graduated from A & M Univeristy in 1943. From there he went directly into World War II, and for 44 months, he served in the Quartermaster Remount Division of the Army, attaining the rank of Captain. His overseas duty was in India and Burma.
When he returned home in 1946, he married Syble Alyene Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Miller of Pleasant Grove, Mills County.
Thurman taught in the Veterans' School of Lampasas County from 1946 to 1953, then he became the Vocational Agriculture teacher in Lometa High School. One of his contributions to the Lometa School was the organization and implementation of the first school rodeo program in this area. For several years while they were in Lometa, Syble was organist of the Lometa Methodist Church and taught private piano classes.Thurman was also very active in the Lometa Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school classes, sang in the choir, & worked with the Methodist Youth groups (MYF) in the church district including, Lometa, Goldthwaite, San Saba, & Lampasas. Every year at Christmas he was responsible for organizing the Lometa church youth in caroling for all the shut-ins in Lometa.
In 1958 Thurman, Syble and family moved to the place they bought in Mills County, between Lometa and
Goldthwaite, where they began ranching. Thurman taught Vocational Agriculture in the Goldthwaite High School, and started the school rodeo program there. The present T. A. Head Rodeo Arena is named for him.
Thurman and Syble were very much involved in civic and church activities in Goldthwaite. Syble continued to teach music and play the organ for their church and for funerals and weddings.
They own and have been living on the Pigfoot Ranch in Mills County, Payne Gap area.
They have two children, both of whom were born in Lampasas County. Tommy, (m.Wynona Wasserman),and Kathy Head Campbell.
Thurman and his wife, life-long love and companion, Syble have been living at the Retirement home in Goldthwaite the last few years, due to Syble's failing health.

GOLDTHWAITE ¯ Funeral services for Thurman Head, 91, of Goldthwaite, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at the First United Methodist Church with pastor Carlos Cloyd assisted by Doug Holtzclaw, Stewart Farrell and Kevin Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home.
He died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, in Goldthwaite.
He was born May 23, 1921, in Center City, to James Welch (J.W.) Head and Lufa (Owens) Head. He was married to Syble Miller on Aug. 11, 1946, in Pleasant Grove. He was a teacher and a rancher. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Syble Head of Goldthwaite; children, Tommy Head and wife Wynona of Goldthwaite and Kathi Campbell and Sam of Star; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Vonnie Price, Eleanor Head, Ola B. Landers, Nadine Core and Ruby Brazil.
