BIG RAPIDS [MI] - On March 2 of this year, the world said goodbye to a noble soul, who went by the name of Prabhakara "Pubby" Baliga. He was a very intelligent man, and also very stubborn, but was the kindest person I knew. My grandparents were married 53 years, and loved each other to the last. After she passed away, he spent every day missing his other half. On every Sunday morning, he would say, "This is the day your grandmother died, at this time," and on the second day of each month, he would say, "On June second, your grandmother died." Every Halloween, they would sit on their porch at 604 Lilac Lane in Big Rapids and hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters. They prepared for days, and would thoroughly enjoy the evening and the costumes. As Halloween approached he got increasingly anxious, not wanting to continue the tradition alone. Finally on that fateful Halloween night, he had a heart attack, and spiraled downward. He had triple bypass surgery, which improved his condition, but not much. Every important day there was another assault on his broken heart. March 2, 2014, the day of his passing, was orchestrated perfectly. He was in room 6004, and the number of his house is 604. He was on the sixth floor, and six was my grandparents' favorite number. The date and day of the week correspond with the date of my grandmother's passing. He made sure my mother and I were there with him when he moved on, just like my grandmother. Their last words to me were the same, and until the very last second he was alert and made his conscious decision to join his wife when he was asked. Everything was the same. This funny, smart, brave, wise man was struck down by one thing: the loss of his soulmate. Although I could share with you many other memories (such as the fact that he was a proud Texas Aggie with a PhD and a Fulbright scholar and Phi Beta Kappa with many scientific contributions in biochemistry), the one I chose to share was of Pubby's everlasting love for his wife, Sharada, and it reflects all of his good qualities. Pubby is survived by his children, Sushila Rao (Sudhir Rao), Lakshmi Hall (John Hall) and Raghav Baliga; and his grandchildren, Arya Rao and Nathan Hall.
