Dr. Georg Meri-Akri Gaston, being the consummate writer that he was, wrote his own obituary. It is as follows:
CANTON, NC-- Georg Gaston, former English professor, croaked (died) on August 13, 2014 due to complications arising from muscular dystrophy, his life-long malady. He was 75 years old. He was born in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1938. Five years later he moved to Germany,
where he lived for 7 years. The next, and permanent, move was to America. After some formative years in various Texas towns, he entered Texas A&M University and graduated four years later. Next, he came to Auburn University, where he earned his M.A. and PhD
in English literature and effectively began his life-long career as a teacher. In 1974 he accepted a teaching position at Appalachian State University, where he remained for 17 years. In 1992, he took early (disability) retirement and left the profession as
an Emeritus.
During his years at ASU, he taught a variety of subjects, including Film, Contemporary Literature, Shakespeare, and both English and American literature spanning the canon. He wrote numerous articles, essays and reviews. And he published several, ranging from
critical works to a biography and a novel.
For 41 years, he was devoted to his wife, Dr. Karen Carmean, the Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of English at Converse College. Besides her, he was passionate about great books, movies, and classical music. And he loved animals of all sorts, even many of
the human kind.
He requested that he be cremated and his ashes spread along those of his wife's in their North Carolina mountain property. He leaves behind a brother, one cousin, a caring sister-in-law and her husband and their extended family. His last words were 'It's been
fun. Mostly.'
