Joe L. Buford, age 92, of Mount Pleasant passed away on Monday, Feb. 15, 2016 in Mount Pleasant. Joe was born on Jan. 10, 1924 in Terrell. He was preceded in death by his wife Faye A. Buford; mother and father, Faye and Maury Buford; brother, W.R. "Bill" Buford.
Joe was in the real estate and insurance business for 68 years. He was a Veteran of World War II, which included 14 months in Germany with the 60th M.P. Company as 1st. Lt.
Joe is a graduate of Terrell High School and Texas A & M University with a BA in Economics and Sociology. A member of the Mount Pleasant Lions Club for 68 years and a Director of Guaranty Bond Bank Mount Pleasant for 31 years, he was married to Faye Adams Buford
for 68 years.
He is survived by four daughters, Celine Allan of Dallas; Cassandra Houlihan and husband Bernie of Dallas; Bette Lynne and husband Kim of College Station; and Amanda Hawkins and husband Kenny of Mount Pleasant; three sons, Lee Buford of Dallas, Maury Buford
and wife Dana of Grapevine, Thomas Buford and wife Charlotte of Waxahachie; thirteen grandchildren, Bryce Buford, Barrett Buford, Callie Keable and husband Brian, Bristal Buford, Taylor Lynne, Brooke Kiecke and husband Chase, Savannah Allan, Lamar Allan, Joseph
Edward Buford, Lee Michael Rhea and wife Charity, Amber Rhea, Justin Hawkins and Jarred Hawkins and wife Ashlie; six great-grandchildren; and a foster son, Donny Richardson and wife Sandy.
Joe has been a member of St Michael's Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant for 68 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Buford was a Member of Mount Pleasant City Council, Mount Pleasant City Zoning Board, and Mount Pleasant City Park Board.
Joe was past President of Mount Pleasant Lions Club, Titus County A & M Club, Mount Pleasant Booster Club and Mount Pleasant Little League; Vice President of Texas A & M Aggie Club. He was also on the Board of Directors of Mount Pleasant First National Bank,
member of Finance Committee of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Life member of American Legion and Life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He received the Distinguished Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from the Lions Club International in 2015 but to his children,
of all Joe’s accomplishments in his lifetime, his greatest was being the husband and father that he was.
A rosary will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016 from 5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. and visitation to follow from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 at St.
Michael's Catholic Church under the direction of Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home of Mount Pleasat. Officiating the service will be Bishop Joseph Strickland, Rev. Steve Paradis, Rev. Octavia Suarez, Rev. Patrick Hartnett. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn
Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are: Art Scharlach, Danny Bockman, Weldon Miller, Charles Newman, Joe Giamfortone and Lance Lowery.
Honorary Pallbearers are: Joe Redfearn, Mickey Jeff, Kerry Wooten, Hudson Old, Danny Hightower, Members of Board of Directors of Guaranty Bank & Trust and Directors of Lions Club.
