Peter Shepherd Rose(1940 – 2018)
Pete was born in Norwich, Connecticut on June 13, 1940 to Ann Marie Brooks and Clayton Shepard Rose and went to heaven on March 20, the first day of spring, 2018.

Because of Pete's life-threatening asthma, his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1944 in the hope the warmer climate would benefit his health. Pete's asthmatic condition had a great impact on his life.

He attended a one-room school in Sunnyslope, Arizona for the first eight years of his education. Pete loved sports, especially baseball. However because of the severity of his asthma he wasn't able to participate. He was encouraged by his parents to excel in the classroom instead, and he did. When his math teacher assigned 50 problems for homework, Pete would do 100. He became focused on academic excellence in all subjects.

He was allowed to change school districts, away from the irrigation canals in Phoenix, and started his freshman year at Camelback High School. He excelled there too, becoming editor of the school newspaper, winner of several state forensic competitions and valedictorian of his graduating class in 1958. In his "down time" he practiced the piano for hours at a time until he became an outstanding classical pianist.

Although he was offered scholarships at many universities outside Arizona, including Stanford and Julliard, his parents were fearful of his leaving Arizona because of his health. So, Pete graduated summa cum laude from Phoenix College in 1961 and also at Arizona State University in Tempe with both a B.A. and an M.A. in economics in 1963.

He met his future wife, Kandy, through their church involvement at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Phoenix and on June 5, 1965 they were married there. Following Pete's completion of his course work for his PhD at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and the birth of their first son, Robert in 1968, the family moved to Dallas, Texas. Pete joined the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and completed his dissertation for his PhD from the University of Arizona in 1970.

In 1971, following three years as a research economist for the Dallas Fed, and the 1969 birth of second son, Michael, the family moved to College Station, Texas. Pete was appointed Assistant Professor of Finance in the College of Business at Texas A&M University. He also served as an Energy Scholar with the Center for Energy and Mineral Resources and was elected as a member of the Faculty Senate. In 1979 the family welcomed the birth of their third son, Jason.

Following his promotion to full professor and tenure, Pete became the first holder of an endowed chair in the TAMU College of Business Administration (The Blocker Chair) which he held until his retirement as professor emeritus from Texas A&M in August of 2000. Pete was a prolific writer and researcher. He authored more than 200 published articles and 30+ research and college textbooks several of which, including two of the most popular, Money and Capital Markets and Commercial Bank Management, went many editions and were translated into several languages. Pete was named Researcher of the Year at Texas A&M, and a few years later, Teacher of the Year.

Following his retirement in 2000, Pete and Kandy moved to Bozeman, Montana, where he continued writing books and articles relating to the structure of the banking industry and the U.S. financial system. He also served as a consultant to businesses; a member of the advisory board of the Take Charge Institute at the University of Arizona; a member of the board of directors of Take Charge America, Phoenix and member of the advisory council for the Center for International Business at Texas A&M University. He was instrumental in the development of a model for teaching high school and college students how to manage their finances.

Pete was a consummate lifetime scholar. Research and writing were his greatest joys and continued to fully occupy his time, even in retirement, until the advent of Alzheimer's. He continued to find enjoyment in reading the Wall Street Journal and market reports until he was finally robbed of the ability to do so. He died peacefully on March 20, 2018 after fourteen years of resisting the onslaught of Alzheimer's disease.

Our family wants to express thanks to Dr. Tom Kelly, Dr. Jaime Eschler, Dr. Borgenicht, and the Hospice team and especially Jasmine who went above and beyond on many occasions to provide compassionate care. Special thanks to all the staff who cared for him so professionally and with great kindness at Gallatin Rest Home. Special thanks also to Dr. Troy Noki and staff, and to Nicole Brown who provided such kind care to him.

We were blessed with a very strong support team during this difficult time. Many tended to our spiritual and physical needs including Rev. Leo Proxell and Laurie Croghan and members of Sunday to Sunday at Holy Rosary Parish. Also friends Mark and Lynda Frisby and members of Bozeman Rotary Club, Alice and Crockett Nash, Kyle and Gussie Miller, Quinn Greenough, Shawn Hertz, Koy Hoover, Michelle and JT and the staff of Stiffel; neighbors of Hyalite Meadow subdivision, Hyalite Rural Fire Department, and countless others who were so kind to keep checking on us and asking "What do you need?" We are very grateful.
