John Hugh Winn

John Hugh Winn was born January 8, 1930, in Fort Worth, Texas and was raised in Houston. His love of animals led him to enroll at Texas A&M University, which offered the only veterinarian school program. While a fondness of dogs remained with him throughout his life, he eventually graduated with a B. S., and later, and M. A. in Economics.

Texas A&M was at that time a military college, and upon graduation Hugh became a second lieutenant. In 1952, he married Elaine Spoor. Their first child, Kenneth, was born a year later in 1953. Shortly thereafter, the army sent him to the demilitarized zone in what is now North Korea. In subsequent years, he maintained his connection with the military through the Army Reserve Corps. For many years he served as a consultant on appointments to the military Academy at West Point. He retired as a colonel.

Upon Hugh‘s return from active military service, he accepted a position as assistant professor in the agricultural extension service with Montana State University in Bozeman. It was there that their second child Patsy was born, in September of 1956. In 1960, Hugh took a similar position in the economics department at Colorado State University, rising to full professor. He retired from full-time teaching and the extension service in 1985.

In 1997, Hugh and Elaine moved to Sun City in Georgetown, Texas, where she later died, in 2005. In Sun City, he helped found and taught at Senior University. He was a long time member of Wellspring United Methodist Church. In 2008, he married his second wife, Ruth Duke, who survives him. In addition to his son, Kenneth and daughter-in-law Karen Winn, and daughter Patsy and husband beak Rogers, he is survived by Ruth‘s daughters, Belinda and Tanya, and his four grandchildren, Alice Winn, David Winn, Duncan Rogers (Brianna), and Kelly Rogers.
