Billy Gene McCoy
December 15, 1940 - August 23, 2018

Billy Gene McCoy, born December 15, 1940 in Texarkana, Texas and raised in Marietta, Texas passed away suddenly on August 23, 2018 in Henderson, Nevada. Billy graduated from Paul Pewitt High School, Omaha, Texas in 1959. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration-Accounting from Texas A&M University in 1963 and a master’s degree in business from Auburn University in 1975.

Billy was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force in 1963. He served his country with distinction as an officer in the Air Force for thirty years, rising to the rank of Major General before he retired in 1993. Billy flew 223 combat missions with the 4th Tactical Fighter Squadron out of Da Nang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. Some of his other notable assignments included squadron commander of the 91st Tactical Fighter Squadron in Bentwaters, England, commander of the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing, Langley, Virginia, deputy chief of staff for operations of NATO’s Second Allied Tactical Air Force, Rheindahlen, West Germany, and commander of the U.S. Air Force Tactical Fighter Weapons Center, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Over his career in the Air Force, Billy amassed over 4,300 flying hours in various fighter aircraft, including F-4s, F104s, A-10s, and F-15s. The F-15 was his favorite.

Upon retirement from the Air Force Billy and Linda split time between Las Vegas, Nevada and Marietta, Texas. After the Air Force, Billy kept busy serving on the board of directors of Boyd Gaming, Nevada Federal Credit Union, Luscombe Aircraft Corporation, and the Community College of Southern Nevada. He spent his final years raising cattle in Marietta.

Billy G. is preceded in death by his wife Linda. They are survived by their daughter, Julie Percevecz of Schertz, Texas, William McCoy of Marietta, Texas, Michael McCoy of Houston, Texas, three grandchildren, Joshua Carrell of San Antonio, Texas, Katie Carrell of Schertz, Texas, and Alexandria Herndon, of Fort Worth, Texas and three great-grandchildren, Sterling, Piercen, and Kias Herndon.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 3, 2018 at Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Marietta. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Marietta with Dr. Chas Carlisle officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Marietta.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oak Ridge Cemetery Association.
