on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Tranquil Cemetery, an historic Texas cemetery for which Claude helped to obtain a historical marker in 2001.
Claude was born on October 3, 1934 in Mineola, Texas, the first child of Claud and Ruby (Bruner) Alexander. He moved to Mt. Pleasant as a young child, and grew up in the family home on South Jefferson. His parents operated the Hillbilly Café and Alexander’s
Café in downtown Mt. Pleasant for many years, where Claude worked with them and on the family farm from an early age. He attended Mt. Pleasant schools, graduating with honors in 1952. In September 1953, he married Lucretia (Ringgold) Alexander, also an MPHS
graduate.
Claude graduated from Texas A&M University in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in Range and Forestry. He worked with the Soil Conservation Service before enlisting in the United States Army in 1957. Claude served in engineering and intelligence units in Germany
until his discharge in 1960. He returned to the Soil Conservation Service, but was recruited by the Texas Highway Department in Mt. Pleasant in 1961. In 1974, he left the highway department to pursue cattle ranching and additional education. He completed an
Associate of Applied Science in Mid-Management from Paris Junior College in 1975. He worked for Dorchester Refinery for several years before joining the City of Mt. Pleasant in 1990. At the City, Claude performed inspection and construction supervision functions
in addition to serving as the go-to resource for knowledge and know-how on a wide array of topics. After his retirement, he wrote a Titus County History column for the Mt. Pleasant Daily Tribune, among many other activities that sustained his love of learning.
Throughout his life, Claude was active in community service. He was a Boy Scout and Scout leader for decades, earning honors including the Bronze Bear and Silver Beaver awards from NeTSeO Trails Council. He was a member of Tennison Memorial United Methodist
Church, where he served as a Sunday School leader, Administrative Board member and Trustee, as well as on various committees and projects.
Claude was an exemplary servant leader, humbly and continually taking on tasks and projects for the benefit of his community. He served on, and often chaired, several groups; most notably, the Board of the Mt. Pleasant Public Library and the Friends of the
Library, the Titus County Historical Commission, Mt. Pleasant Habitat for Humanity and Mt. Pleasant Main Street Committee. He loved history and conservation, and this passion is embodied best in two projects which he spearheaded: the restoration of the 1897
Courthouse bell and construction of the Bell Tower, which was dedicated in 2007, and the Mt. Pleasant Public Library and Historical Museum which were dedicated in 2012. For his dedicated service, Claude received many honors and acknowledgements, including
a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce in 2003.
In recognition of Claude’s commitment to his hometown, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Mt. Pleasant Friends of the Library, Titus County Historical Commission or other local charity. The family gives thanks for the loving care that Claude
received from Dr. Nayyar Syed and the staff at the Bo and Patty Pilgrim Cancer Center, Choice Care Hospice and the kind caregivers who attended him in his final months. Remembrances of Claude can be shared in the online registry at batescoopersloanfuneralhome.com.
